By doing so, it established itself as a major Oscar contender since many of the previous recipients of the People’s Choice Award either won or received a nomination for the best picture.
Spielberg thanked festival director Cameron Bailey, staff, and the audience for welcoming his new film with open arms and making this past weekend one he’ll never forget.
“As I said on stage the other night, ‘Above all, I’m glad I brought this film to Toronto!’ This is the most personal film I’ve ever made, and the warm reception from everyone in Toronto made my first visit to TIFF so intimate and personal for me and my entire Fabelman family,” said Spielberg in a statement.
The Fabelmans is inspired by the director’s childhood, and it stars Gabriel LaBelle, Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, and Judd Hirsch. It will have a limited theatrical release on November 11, before expanding wide on November 23.

]]>Quibi (Quite Bites) is a a mobile-based streaming service that is set to launch April 6th, 2020. According to creator Jeffrey Katzenberg, the platform was designed for viewers on the go featuring episodes 7 to 10 minutes long.
Spielberg’s After Dark, however, came with an additional request — that the horror series will only be viable after dark, literally. The acclaimed director requested to make it so that his content would only be available to stream when the sun’s down.
Spielberg’s After Dark will feature an in-app clock that will release a new episode for viewing each night.
“Steven Spielberg came in, and said, ‘I have a super scary story I want to do.’ He’s writing it himself. He hasn’t [written anything in a while] so getting him to write something is fantastic,” said Katzenberg. He added that Spielberg has already penned “five or six episodes of a 10 or 12 chapter story.”
Also on board different Quibi projects are Guillermo del Toro, Sam Raimi, Catherine Hardwick, Anna Kendrick, Doug Liman, Laurence Fishburne and Antoine Fuqua.

The Academy recognized Netflix last month when Roma won 3 Oscars, including Best Foreign Language Film, Best Cinematography, and Best Director.
Netflix has now released a Twitter statement in response to efforts to exclude its films being nominated.
“We love cinema. Here are some things we also love,” Netflix tweeted. “Access for people who can’t always afford, or live in towns without, theatres. Letting everyone, everywhere enjoy releases at the same time. Giving filmmakers more ways to share art. These things are not mutually exclusive.”

The Pulitzer Prize-winning work about African-American women in the American South during the early 1900s was directed for the screen by Steven Spielberg and starred Oprah Winfrey, Danny Glover, and Whoopi Goldberg.
Since then, it has been adapted into a stage musical which has starred American Idol winner, Fantasia Barrino, and Dreamgirls actress, Jennifer Hudson, throughout its various runs.
Spielberg, Winfrey, and producer Quincy Jones are now reportedly adapting the musical version for the screen.
The stage production has won 3 Tony Awards while the film did not take home any of the 11 Academy Awards for which it was nominated.
Perhaps it will be second time lucky…

The 71 year old said that making the film about “the banality of the deepest evil, feels like five years ago,” instead of a quarter of a century.
A recent study showed that a significant portion of millennials in the United States are grossly ignorant regarding the details of the Holocaust, while a majority of Americans believe that such an atrocity could reoccur.
Spielberg expressed his belief that more should be done to educate young people about the Holocaust.
“It’s not a pre-requisite to graduate high school, as it should be. It should be part of the social science, social studies curriculum in every public high school in this country,” he said.
While not stating specifically that Schindler’s List should be taught in schools, the acclaimed director stated that “these stories that Holocaust survivors have the courage to tell” should be on the curriculum.

And now, the 71-year-old is weighing in on a rather controversial topic — Netflix films. Original films distributed by the network have been popping up on the awards scene, with Mudbound earning 4 nominations at the 2018 Academy Awards, and Icarus winning Best Documentary Feature.
Many have questioned whether such films — which did not have traditional theatrical releases — deserve to be recognised amongst those who do. And it appears as though Spielberg is in the “negative” camp.
“Once you commit to a television format, you’re a TV movie,” says the director of Ready Player One. “You certainly, if it’s a good show, deserve an Emmy, but not an Oscar. I don’t believe films that are just given token qualifications in a couple of theatres for less than a week should qualify for the Academy Award nomination.”
