The toxic relationship between Joker and Harley Quinn will be at the heart of Joker: Folie à Deux and the first glimpse of this film is finally here. Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga dance like no one is watching in the first trailer for the Joker sequel, which perfectly captures their bad romance.

The new Joker movie borrows its title from the French term “folie à deux”, meaning “folly of two”, and it’s truly a perfect fit. This term is often used to describe the shared psychosis that we see Arthur Fleck and Harley Quinn develop during their times as inmates at Arkham Asylum.

The new trailer confirms that Joker: Folie à Deux will go down the musical route, and it features several impressive dance numbers. One of them is choreographed to “What the World Needs Now (Is Love Sweet Love)”, but the entire film will feature at least 15 renditions of well-known songs, according to Variety.

Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga will be joined by an impressive group of supporting players, including Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, Steve Coogan, Ken Leung, Harry Lawtey, and Zazie Beetz. Todd Phillips returned to direct the sequel, which will hit the silver screen on October 4.

Joker is laughing all the way to the bank.

The Todd Phillips film opened worldwide on Friday and drew audiences in 73 countries, securing its spot at number one at the box office.

The film, starring Joaquin Phoenix, delves into the backstory of Batman’s nemesis, depicting the character as a mentally-ill man named Arthur Fleck who, after failing in his career as a stand-up comedian, turns to a life of crime.

The film made its debut at the Venice Film Festival where Phoenix received a ten-minute standing ovation and the feature won the prestigious Golden Lion award.

The domestic opening was the largest of all time for October, topping that of Venom which came out last year. It now also lays claim to the fourth largest opening ever for an R-rated feature.

The Warner Bros. movie, which premiered on more than 22,000 screens, drew in $140.5 million globally. Coupled with the $93.5 million made domestically, the film raked in an impressive $234 million overall.

Director Darren Aronofsky has revealed that Joker star Joaquin Phoenix was top of his list to take on the role of Batman.

Aronofsky is a director with a talent for creating movies that get under his audience’s skin. From the paranoid Pi to the disturbing cinematography of Black Swan, Aronofsky knows how to make his audience squirm. If he were to create a Batman movie, it would be darker and grittier than ever before… kind of like Todd Phillips’ new Joker movie. In fact, the two directors both selected Joaquin Phoenix for the lead role only for Aronofsky, Phoenix would take on the role of the superhero and not the villain.

“I always wanted Joaquin Phoenix for Batman,” Aronofksy told Yahoo!. “I hear the way they’re talking about the Joker movie and that’s exactly – that was my pitch.

“I was like: We’re going to shoot in East Detroit and East New York. We’re not building Gotham. The Batmobile – I wanted to be a Lincoln Continental with two bus engines in it. It was the duct-tape, MacGyver Batman,” he continued. “It’s funny, I think we were just sort of out of time with our idea.

“I understood that [with] comics, there’s room for all different types of titles, but I think Hollywood at that time was still in the golden age of comics, and they were still just doing the classic titles in classic ways.”

Joker is out in cinemas now.

Todd Phillips’ take on the DC villain who has a vendetta against Batman is the most rounded and raw depiction of the character that we have seen on screen up until this point.

The film made its grand debut at the Venice Film Festival where its star, Joaquin Phoenix, received a 10 minute-long standing ovation.

The praise has now transpired into the feature being awarded the Golden Lion at the festival, the highest honor a film can receive.

“I want to thank Warner Bros. and DC for stepping out of their comfort zone and taking a big swing on me,” said Phillips as he accepted the prize.

The accolade went last year to Roma and the year before to The Shape of Water, both of which were awarded Oscars for Best Director.

Joker opens in cinemas on October 4th.

We were convinced that Heath Ledger gave the greatest Joker performance of all time.

But the first trailer from the upcoming Joker movie is giving us doubts…

Joaquin Phoenix takes on the role of the Clown Prince of Crime in what is probably the most raw depiction of the character yet.

The teaser trailer for the film, which premiered at CinemaCon, illustrates how The Joker was a man named Arthur who just went a little — okay, a lot — mad.

“My mother always tells me to smile and put on a happy face. She told me I had a purpose, to bring laughter and joy to the world,” Phoenix can be heard saying as we witness the tragedy that was Arthur’s life.

Todd Phillips is directing the origin story, which also stars Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Shea Whigham, Frances Conroy, Marc Maron, Douglas Hodge, and Brett Cullen.

The “tragic comedy” comes out on October 4th.
