“Joker” Claims Top Prize at the Venice Film Festival

Joaquin Phoenix in "Joker"

Awards season is still a few months away, but we’re already telling you to keep an eye on Joker.

Todd Phillips’ take on the DC villain who has a vendetta against Batman is the most rounded and raw depiction of the character that we have seen on screen up until this point.

The film made its grand debut at the Venice Film Festival where its star, Joaquin Phoenix, received a 10 minute-long standing ovation.

The praise has now transpired into the feature being awarded the Golden Lion at the festival, the highest honor a film can receive.

“I want to thank Warner Bros. and DC for stepping out of their comfort zone and taking a big swing on me,” said Phillips as he accepted the prize.

The accolade went last year to Roma and the year before to The Shape of Water, both of which were awarded Oscars for Best Director.

Joker opens in cinemas on October 4th.
