It was too good to be true…

So much excitement surrounded the Game of Thrones prequel that was being developed by HBO.

Set thousands of years before the events depicted in the Emmy Award-winning series which wrapped in May, the prospective show was being written by the creator of A Song of Ice and Fire himself, George R.R. Martin, and Jane Goldman who penned Kingsman.

According to the official description, the series planned to “chronicle the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend, only one thing is for sure: it’s not the story we think we know.”

Naomi Watts has signed on to the project, along with Miranda Richardson, Jamie Campbell Bower, Georgie Henley, Naomi Ackie, and Denise Gough.

A pilot episode was shot in Belfast in June, but HBO has now decided to, alas, not pick up the series…

Yet, hope remains for Westeros fans.

The network is reportedly close to ordering a pilot for a second spin-off series that focuses on the Targaryen civil war.

Accompanied by the mysterious Peggy Scott, an African-American woman masquerading as her maid, Marian gets caught up in the dazzling lives of her stupendously rich neighbors, led by a ruthless railroad tycoon and his ambitious wife struggling for acceptance by the Astor and Vanderbilt set. Will Marian follow the established rules of society, or forge her own path in this exciting new world that is on the brink of transformation into the modern age?”

HBO has confirmed what many Game of Thrones fans already knew.

During the broadcast of the eighth and final season, dozens of die-hard Westeros devotees were disappointed with the way the series was proceeding, claiming that the writers had forgone all character development and rushed the plot to conclude in the 6 episode time frame.

The disappointment led to more than 1.6 million people signing a petition, calling on HBO to remake the final season which had cost millions of dollars to produce.

“There are very few downsides to having a hugely popular show. One I can think of, when you try to end it, many people have opinions on how to end it. I think that comes with the territory,” said the network’s president of programming, Casey Bloys, while at the Television Critics Association event.

“The petition shows a lot of enthusiasm and passion for the show, but it wasn’t something we seriously considered. I can’t imagine another network would.”

Aside from the anger felt by fans, critics found the final season praiseworthy, as it earned 32 nominations at the upcoming Emmy Awards.

Fans got a little bit more of Game of Thrones thanks to Sunday’s two-hour documentary on HBO’s acclaimed fantasy drama.

Game of Thrones: The Last Watch, from British filmmaker Jeanie Finlay, chronicled David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’s final season of the show. The docu delves deep into what it took to make such an epically ambitious season, pulling back to curtain to give fans a look at the cast and crew’s final journey in the world of Westeros.

The Last Watch revealed that Kit Harington, aka Jon Snow, only discovered that he was to slay his love and Queen, Daenerys Targaryen (played by Emilia Clarke) at the table read for the final episode. The footage of that moment shows both actors get quite emotional of the fate of their on-screen love.

But what the docu really does is give us behind the scenes look at the unsung heroes of Game of Thrones – the costumes, hair, makeup, and special effects people.

According to production designer Deborah Riley, each hour filmed during the eight and final season of Game of Thrones cost $15 million or more. “All we were doing in seasons 4, 5, 6 and 7 were training for season 8,” Riley said.

David Nutter, who directed three of season eight’s episodes, said of the production’s immense creative team: “I’m a conductor of fine musicians who basically waves his arms around.”

The follow-up to The Young Pope, Paolo Sorrentino’s The New Pope, has tapped Sharon Stone and Marilyn Manson to guest star, HBO has announced.

The upcoming Sorrentino-helmed series is a sequel to 2016’s The Young Pope. While not much is known about the plot or the characters, it is known that Jude Law will reprise his role as the leader of the Catholic Church. It is also known that he will be joined by John Malkovich.

Back in January, HBO released a first-look image of Malkovich and Law, both in similar papal vestments, so it’s fair to assume that the series will feature two popes, much like the recent real-life situation that resulted in there being two living popes for the first time in centuries.

Other returning cast members include Cecile de France, Ludivine Sagnier, and Silvio Orlando.

No premiere date has been set yet.

It looks like HBO got their order wrong.

Aside from all the drama, dragons, and death in the last episode of Game of Thrones, there was also a goof that reminded us that the magical series set in Westeros is actually created by people who live in 2019.

The banquet scene at Winterfell featured lots of wine and mead, but it also mistakenly included a takeaway coffee cup.

Fans were quick to point out the cup, which appeared to be from Starbucks, on the table in front of Daenerys Targaryen.

The mishap resulted in the humorous hashtag #Starkbucks trending on Twitter, tying in nicely with the title of the episode — The Last of the Starks.

To their credit, HBO has now offered its own humorous take on the faux pas.

“The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake,” the network said in a statement. “Daenerys had ordered a herbal tea.”

Starbucks also responded, saying: “TBH we’re surprised she didn’t order a Dragon Drink.”

When a Twitter user commented, “What do Dragons drink, anyway?” The coffee chain replied, “Whatever they want.”

We wonder how the baristas spelt Dany’s name…
