Game of Thrones director Neil Marshall has voiced his agreement with criticisms that the final season of the show was ended in “a little bit of a rush.”

Despite receiving an outstanding number of Emmy nominations, season 8 of the HBO series was met with backlash. Fans claimed that the ending was disappointing in comparison to the rest of the show and some people even signed a petition to get the final season of the show remade.

After months of staying silent on the topic, Marshall has now confessed that he agrees with criticisms of season 8. Nonetheless, he praises showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss for doing an “amazing job”.

“Inevitably, I would’ve taken a different approach to directing,” he told The Metro. “One of the greatest experiences I had with working on both those episodes was that they were so open to bringing my ideas, particularly about battle scenes and how battles worked. I would’ve definitely added my strategy and knowledge to that.”

He added: ”I kind of agree with a lot of the criticism that it was really rushed. Everyone ended up where they were meant to end up but they got there in a little bit of a rush in the end.”

Game of Thrones Season 8 is available to watch on Now TV and Amazon.

HBO has confirmed what many Game of Thrones fans already knew.

During the broadcast of the eighth and final season, dozens of die-hard Westeros devotees were disappointed with the way the series was proceeding, claiming that the writers had forgone all character development and rushed the plot to conclude in the 6 episode time frame.

The disappointment led to more than 1.6 million people signing a petition, calling on HBO to remake the final season which had cost millions of dollars to produce.

“There are very few downsides to having a hugely popular show. One I can think of, when you try to end it, many people have opinions on how to end it. I think that comes with the territory,” said the network’s president of programming, Casey Bloys, while at the Television Critics Association event.

“The petition shows a lot of enthusiasm and passion for the show, but it wasn’t something we seriously considered. I can’t imagine another network would.”

Aside from the anger felt by fans, critics found the final season praiseworthy, as it earned 32 nominations at the upcoming Emmy Awards.

The watch has ended with a massive watch.

After eight seasons, three dragons, and an infinite body count, Game of Thrones came to an end on Sunday night.

As fans prepared to bid farewell to the characters they had courted for almost a decade, it is likely that curious non-watchers decided to tune in, too.

The result was a mammoth 19.3 million viewers.

The figure set a definite record, becoming the biggest single telecast in HBO history, assuming the crown from the 4th season premiere of The Sopranos in 2002, which drew 13.4 million.

The final season of GOT has been one of records (despite poor approval ratings) — the premiere garnered 17.4 million viewers, while the penultimate episode, “The Bells,” received 18.4 million. Both were record highs for HBO at the time.

However, despite the improved viewership, the season averaged a lukewarm 69% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the lowest-rated in the history of the show, while the finale itself only scored 56%.

Either way, it is the end of an era.

Just because the show has ended, doesn’t mean Game of Thrones fans have to get upset just yet; one week after the finale, HBO will be airing a 2-hour documentary about the making of the final season.

The trailer teases several heart-wrenching scenes from the documentary. A shot of D.B. Weiss (one of the show’s co-creators) can be seen addressing his cast at their final script run-through.

“This is strange,” he says. “Here we are at the last table read. It’s like looking around and seeing your family.”

After ten years and 8 seasons together, the cast and crew is understandably close and emotional over their impending goodbyes. After Weiss’ speech, the actors give their producer a boisterous ovation.

The teaser also features behind the scenes footage of the episodes, especially the makings of the major battles at Winterfell and King’s Landing.

Several candid remarks are caught on tape, including one cast member saying “I can’t even begin to imagine how this is going to look on TV.”

The documentary in its entirety, entitled Game of Thrones: The Last Watch, will air May 29th at 9pm EST.

17.8 million people tuned in to watch the massive Game of Thrones showdown that was the Battle of Winterfell, but apparently they ain’t seen nothing yet.

The epic battle depicted in The Long Night took 55 nights to film and is the longest clash ever on screen.

“It was nuts,” Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys Targaryen, told Jimmy Kimmel on his show. “I mean, being in—what you saw was really what it was like shooting it. You saw blood and mud and angry, screaming people. And then backstage there was blood and mud — and asleep people.”

But as exciting as The Long Night was, Emilia has teased that even more action awaits us.

“Episode five is bigger. Episode five is [exhales] — I mean, four and five and six, they’re all insane, but like… Find the biggest TV you can.”

Producers have compensated for a shorter final season with longer episodes.

For those keeping track, episode five — which will be the penultimate installment — will air on the 12th of May.

Game of Thrones fans did not mind the length of the most recent episode, if numbers are anything to go by.

The Long Night was just that, clocking in at 82 minutes — making it the longest-running episode of the series.

The entire episode focused on the Battle of Winterfell, which marked the final showdown between the armies of the living and the dead.

The much-hyped installment has now also become the most-watched in the show’s history!

Viewing figures from HBOGo and HBO Now show that episode three of Game of Thrones’ final season drew in even more viewers than the season’s premiere on the 14th of April.

17.8 million people tuned in to The Long Night compared to 17.4 who watched the season’s first episode.

A record number of people have tuned in to the popular series’ swansong season, and it’s expected that the final episode — which premieres on May 19th — will top them all.

There was always going to be massive pressure on the eighth season of Game of Thrones, but it looks like the show has delivered the goods.

The final season of the award-winning series has gotten people excited for months, as the show finally whittles down to who will survive the White Walkers and who will eventually sit on the Iron Throne.

All that excitement has now paid off, with HBO releasing viewership figures for the premiere.

The first episode of season 8 garnered 17.4 million viewers on Sunday night, across all platforms, including linear, HBOGO, and HBO NOW. The figure has set a multi-platform record.

Game of Thrones has consistently increased its numbers when it comes to premieres, starting with just 9.3 million viewers for the first season and 25.7 million for the seventh.

Considering it’s the final season premiere, we say it’s a pretty good way to bow out.

With the fate of Westeros on the line, we have only two choices: fight together now or die.

Those are Tyrion Lannister’s feelings, anyway, as expressed in yet another teaser from HBO before the main event.

The latest appetiser includes shots of dragons flying over Winterfell, battle ships, and scenes from what we assume will be the great Battle of Winterfell.

“Our enemy doesn’t tire, doesn’t stop,” Jon Snow is heard saying. “They’re coming.”

And so is winter.

Game of Thrones final seasons starts on April 14th.

It’s all gonna come down to the living versus the dead in the final season of Game of Thrones.

With “winter coming” in just a few short weeks, we have gotten what seems to be the last look at the upcoming season before the action commences.

HBO’s new teaser trailer paints a foreboding image, filled with the empty snow-covered halls of Winterfell amid a bevy of screams.

Clues pertaining to Westeros’s heroes lay throughout the deserted courtyard including Jon Snow’s sword Longclaw, Jamie Lannister’s hand, Arya’s own sword Needle, Bran’s wheelcart, and Daenerys’s dragon chain…

The network also released a poster for season 8 which appears to just be a load of bodies in the snow.

“The great war was were,” says the caption.

Shivers.

Prepare the body bags — the final season of Game of Thrones premieres on the 14th of April.

Can you believe we’re just one week away from the final Game of Thrones premiere?!
