Known for playing Sherlock Holmes in two feature films, Robert Downey Jr. is taking on the role of another famous literary character.

The Avengers: Endgame actor will be playing Doctor Doolittle in Universal Pictures’ new film.

The doctor was created by author Hugh Lofting in 1920 and featured in several children’s books as a man who could speak to animals.

Downey Jr. will now be using that skill as he embarks on a perilous adventure to save the young Queen of England who has fallen ill. He is accompanied by a menagerie of animals — and, of course, runs into a few who mean him harm.

Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen, Jim Broadbent, and Harry Collett star in live-action roles, with John Cena, Marion Cotillard, Ralph Fiennes, Selena Gomez, Tom Holland, Rami Malek, Kumail Nanjiani, Octavia Spencer, Emma Thompson, and Frances de la Tour all providing their voices as animals.

Doolittle opens at cinemas on January 17th, 2020.
