Game of Thrones fans may never forgive George R.R. Martin for the Red Wedding, but at least one person is glad it happened.

Richard Madden.

The season 3 incident spelled the end for Madden’s character, Robb Stark, and also left many people with a lot of anxiety about weddings…

But during a discussion with Amy Adams on Variety’s Actors on Actors series, the Scottish actor revealed that he is pleased with the end result.

“It was such a hard thing to finish, because from first pilot to my death was five years,” Madden said. “But five years was a great time to be on the show. It helped me so much with my career and experience. I learned a lot from shooting 30 hours of television. You really start to learn the trade doing that. And then I was thankful to leave it.”

Since leaving the HBO series, the 33 year-old actor starred in Cinderella, The Bodyguard, and most recently, Rocketman.

Despite his “early” departure, Madden has no hard feelings towards the actors whose characters made it to the series finale.

“The actors [who made it to the end] must be 11 years into playing these characters. Give these guys some medals, because that is a marathon.”
