The first movie in the Purge franchise came out of nowhere and somehow topped the box office with a budget of just $3 million. Although the critics didn’t buy into the story about a dystopian future in which it is allowed to do illegal acts once a year for 12-hours, the fans absolutely loved it. This is why we already have the fourth installment on the way, although the original premiered in 2013.

Universal Pictures now revealed that the fourth entry in the franchise will be titled The First Purge, and is set for release on July 4th, 2018. The studio also released a short teaser and a movie poster you can check out below.

This wasn’t all. We now know the majority of the main cast that will include Y’Lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, Joivan Wade, Luna Lauren Velez and Marisa Tomei. Also, a brief synopsis of The First Purge was revealed as well, so you can check it out below.

“Behind every tradition lies a revolution. Next Independence Day, witness the rise of our country’s 12 hours of annual lawlessness. Welcome to the movement that began as a simple experiment: The First Purge. To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the marginalized, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation.”

James DeMonaco, creator of the franchise and director of the first three movies, will return once again as a writer but this time he decided to let Gerard McMurray handle the directing duties.

In case you want more of the Purge, you’ll be glad to know that a television series based on the movies could premier in 2018.
