Netflix Releases First Look at Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip

We finally get a first look image for The Crown’s new Prince Philip. 

Netflix released the first photo of Tobias Menzies in character via its official Twitter on Tuesday. The actor is taking over the role of the Duke of Edinburgh from Matt Smith who portrayed the Duke for season One and Two of series, Menzies is set to play Prince Philip for seasons Three and Four. Menzies will play opposite a new Queen Elizabeth II, who will be portrayed by Olivia Colman who took over the lead from Claire Foy. Helena Bonham Carter will also take over the role of Princess Margaret, from Vanessa Kirby.

The series which chronicles the British royal family has decided to forego makeup and prosthetics to embody the aging of the characters. Instead, production has decided on changing casts, ultimately opting to bring in older actors and actresses as the characters age. 

Josh O’Connor as a young Prince Charles, Marion Bailey as Elizabeth, the Queen Mother and Ben Daniels as Antony Armstrong-Jones, Princess Margaret’s husband round out the cast.

Season Three of the monarchical drama covers the period of 1964 through the early 1970s. It is currently and in production and is expected to premiere in 2019.
