Michael Fassbender is in the final stages of negotiations to star in Taika Waititi’s forthcoming soccer drama.

The two-time Oscar nominee is in talks to lace up his cleats for the Kiwi director’s Next Goal Wins is, which is based on the 2014 British documentary of the same name.

The project about the national soccer team of American Samoa will follow the true story of Dutch coach Thomas Rongen, to be played by Fassbender, who attempts to turn the underdog team’s fortunes around in time to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.

The film re-teams Waititi with Fox Searchlight. Waititi will direct from a script he penned with British writer Iain Morris.

Waititi is set to helm Marvel’s 4th Thor film, Love & Thunder, before directing Next Goal Wins. His latest feature Jojo Rabbit recently had its world premiere in Toronto.

Fassbender most recently appeared in the X-Men film Dark Phoenix.
