Is Melissa McCarthy Heading Under the Sea?

Melissa McCarthy is being considered for a role that, in our opinion, is worth losing her voice for.

The two-time Oscar nominee is being eyed for the role of sea witch Ursula in the remake of Disney’s The Little Mermaid.

As fans of the animated classic will know, Ursula makes our favorite mermaid, Ariel, give up her beautiful voice in exchange for legs in order to woo Prince Eric.

The Can You Ever Forgive Me? star has not sung in any previous on-screen roles but will be required to fine-tune her pipes for the musical, which will include the classic songs from the original, as well as new numbers written by Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

The directing and writing team behind Mary Poppins Returns, Rob Marshall and David Magee, will perform their respective roles on The Little Mermaid.

In spite of the project having been in development for quite a while, the part of Ariel has not yet been announced. That said, Lindsay Lohan has made it explicitly clear on numerous occasions that it is her dream role.

At the moment we’ll have to wait and see whether we see McCarthy under the sea…
