The Oscars curse has struck again.

Many actresses who have won Best Actress for their work have announced that they are divorcing their partners within a couple years of their win.

Examples of those who have fallen victim to the golden statuette hex include Reese Witherspoon, Hillary Swank, and Sandra Bullock.

But the latest victim isn’t even an actor at all. He isn’t even female.

Just a few days after winning his Oscar for Best Director (on his 4th attempt) for The Shape of Water, Guillermo del Toro has revealed that he and his wife, Lorenza Newton, got divorced last year.

The pair, who had been married for 31 years, separated in February 2017 and finalized their divorce in September, but had decided to keep the news private as Guillermo embarked on his awards season tour which would result in numerous honors, including 2 Oscars.

During his acceptance speech on the big night, the 53-year-old made mention of his daughters, but not his former wife.

Perhaps he might take a page from one of his character’s books and consider dating fish…
