Gorillaz Team Up with Malian Fatoumata Diawara for 2nd Episode of “Song Machine”

In January, Gorillaz released their Song Machine project, in which they abandoned the traditional album concept and collaborate with various artists to release new episodes of the project throughout the year. Now, the animated band has released the second episode of the project.

The episode sees the band teaming up with the Grammy-nominated Malian star Fatoumata Diawara for the song “Désolé” (“Sorry” in French). The love song is sung in three languages – English, French, and Bambara.

The video shows most of the band traveling through a portal that is found in the Kong Studios to Lake Como in Italy and sharing a speed boat ride with Diawara. Only poor Murdoc is left behind.

“Making ‘Désolé’ with Fatou was a real moment for me, you know,” drummer Russel said in a statement. “She’s an African Queen. This lady made the song what it is, beautiful, like life. What can I say about ‘Désolé’? They say sorry is the hardest word, but that’s not true… Try saying antidisestablishmentarianism with a mouth full of gluten-free cronuts on a speed boat without licking your lips.”
