“Coming 2 America” to Debut March 2021

Coming 2 America is heading to Amazon.

Amazon Studios has acquired the worldwide rights to the highly anticipate sequel to the 1988 comedy. The film from Paramount Pictures will officially be launched on Amazon Prime Video on March 5, 2021. 

According to Variety, the deal was struck last month. 

The original film from John Landis which starred Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall and James Earl Jones, among others, grossed more than $288 million worldwide. It followed Crown Prince Akeem (Murphy) who travels to Queens, New York, and goes undercover to find a wife. 

The forthcoming sequel is set in the royal country of Zamunda, where newly-crowned King Akeem and his best friend, Semmi (Hall) return to after living in Queens, New York.

“Coming to America was a cultural phenomenon that is one of the most loved and celebrated comedies of all time,” Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, said in a statement. “Thanks to Eddie Murphy’s comedic genius along with the brilliant filmmakers, writers and fabulous cast, we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate this new adventure. We know audiences around the world will fall in love with this hilarious, joyful movie that will surely become a timeless favorite.”
