Saturday Night Live is usually full of laughs, but this past episode included a few tears, as well.

Adam Sandler returned to the SNL stage for the first time in 24 years as he took on the role of host.

During his time at 30 Rock, Sandler worked alongside Beverley Hills Ninja actor Chris Farley.

Three years after being dismissed from the sketch show, at the same time as the Water Boy star, Farley sadly died as the result of an overdose.

Sandler has also been known for writing songs (his Chanukkah ones being particularly famous), and so he chose his SNL hosting debut to pay tribute to his late friend and co-star through his musical talents.

The moving and somber lyrics include: “Hey buddy, life’s moved on but you still bring us so much joy / Make my kids laugh with your YouTube clips or Tommy Boy / And when they ask me who’s the funniest guy I ever knew / I tell ’em hands down without a doubt it’s you.”

We hope the audience had tissues.
