Christmas has come early for fans of Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell.

The pair have been announced as planning to star in a retelling of one of the most classic films of all time, A Christmas Carol.

The Charles Dickens novel follows Ebenezer Scrooge — a bitter, selfish old man who, on Christmas Eve, is visited by the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future. The experience then transforms him into a much kinder individual.

The story has been retold numerous times in many forms, with recent versions including a one-man play starring Simon Callow, a Disney 3D animation with Jim Carrey as Scrooge, and another animated version starring The Muppets.

The upcoming adaptation will be written by Tom Stoppard and Bennett Miller, with it not yet confirmed which characters Reynolds and Ferrell will play.
