Beyoncé and SZA gave us two of the best albums of the past year, and BET Awards voters were certainly paying attention. This ceremony returned to Los Angeles on Sunday night and gave us a dramatic tie between Beyoncé and SZA in the album of the year category.
Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, Her Loss by Drake and 21 Savage, DJ Khaled’s God Did, Chris Brown’s Breezy, and GloRilla’s Anyways, Life’s Great were also in the running for this award, and BET voters had a pretty difficult choice to make. They had trouble settling for a single album of the year and decided that SZA’s SOS and Beyoncé’s Renaissance should both take the trophy home.
Both singers came out victorious in two more categories – Beyoncé took home the BET Her Award and the Viewer’s Choice Award for her hit single “Break My Soul”, while SZA was named best female R&B/pop artist, in addition to winning the video of the year award for the viral hit “Kill Bill”.
The race in the movie categories wasn’t so intense, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever easily defeated the competition to be named the best movie. The main acting awards were handed to its star Angela Bassett and the Snowfall actor Damson Idris.
