The Trailer for Ava DuVernay’s New Series is Powerful

Marquis Rodriguez in "When They See Us"

Ava DuVernay’s new series is going to pull at our heartstrings while giving us an anxiety attack, if the full trailer is anything to go by.

The upcoming show, which will be shown on Netflix, is based on the true story of the Central Park Five.

In 1989, five teenagers of color were arrested for the alleged rape and assault of a 28-year-old white woman who was jogging in New York City’s Central Park. Despite not actually committing the crime (another man later confessed), the quintet served between 6 and 13 years in prison after being convicted by two separate juries.

The A Wrinkle in Time director’s series, entitled When They See Us, will span 25 years, from the time of the teenagers’ arrest, to their exoneration, and the settlement they reached with New York City in 2004.

DuVernay also co-wrote the four-part series, which stars Michael K. Williams, Vera Farmiga, John Leguizamo, Felicity Huffman, Niecy Nash, Blair Underwood, Christopher Jackson, and Joshua Jackson among others.

When They See Us debuts on May 31st.
