The Avatar franchise is James Cameron’s magnum opus, but he might not stick around until the very end. The Oscar-winning director recently discussed the future of the film series with Empire and revealed he might step down as the director of the final two installments.

If the franchise sticks to its current schedule, we’ll have to wait until 2028 for the final Avatar film to come out. Cameron described the process of working on these films as “time-consuming” and said that he might take a break to focus on other projects.

“I think eventually over time – I don’t know if that’s after three or after four – I’ll want to pass the baton to a director that I trust to take over, so I can go do some other stuff that I’m also interested in. Or maybe not. I don’t know,” Cameron told Empire.

Avatar fans spent 13 years waiting to return to Pandora. After over a decade in the making, the highly-anticipated sequel Avatar: The Way of Water is hitting the theaters on December 16, with Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Kate Winslet, Sigourney Weaver, and Edie Falco playing key roles.

Cameron is plotting three more films in this franchise, set to hit the theaters on December 20, 2024, December 18, 2026, and December 22, 2028, respectively.

James Cameron has hinted that more Terminator films may well be on their way.

The director, who also brought us Avatar, is on the production team of Terminator: Dark Fate, the highly-anticipated upcoming feature in the Terminator franchise. Audiences have been instructed to ignore the disappointing third, fourth and fifth sequels and to view the film as a direct followup to the second film.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is due to return as the T-800 and Linda Hamilton will reprise her role as Sarah Connor. After 25 years, the feature has the right ingredients to be the perfect reunion film, and according to Cameron, it has the potential to be so much more.

“We spent several weeks breaking story and figuring out what type of story we wanted to tell, so we would have something to pitch,” Cameron told Deadline. “We rolled up our sleeves and started to break out the story and when we got a handle on something we looked at it as a three-film arc, so there is a greater story there to be told.”

He added: “If we get fortunate enough to make some money with Dark Fate, we know exactly where we can go with the subsequent films.”

Terminator: Dark Fate will be released October 23rd.

Oscar-winning director, James Cameron, has now confirmed that the first and second sequels to Avatar have wrapped principal photography for over a year.

“Hi, James Cameron here and today I’m coming to you from the set of the Avatar sequels — and behind me you can see our performance-capture stage. Today we’re capturing some stunt scenes filming some stunt scenes but our principal cast are all wrapped: Sam [Worthington], Zoe [Saldana], Sigourney [Weaver], Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet. They’re done now but they gave us incredible performances. And I can’t tell you how proud I am of the work that they did on these films.”

It’s just, come on guys, there are other stories to tell besides hyper-gonadal males without families doing death-defying things for two hours and wrecking cities in the process. It’s like, oy!”

“Oy” is right because the Oscar winner has now enraged one of the internet’s most feared entities—Marvel fans.

Twitter erupted with members of the fan base inquiring just why Cameron will soon be releasing 4 sequels to Avatar if he is so keen for “other stories.”

Thankfully though, Marvel head Kevin Feige didn’t take the comment too seriously, telling Vulture, “Uh, he loves the movies! That’s awesome! Wow, James Cameron loves our movies! That’s exciting!”

Did anyone think that just maybe Cameron is more of a DC fan…?

During a recent private event, James Cameron revealed that Linda Hamilton is part of the planned reboot of the Terminator franchise, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Oscar-winning director emphasized the impact of Hamilton’s tough heroine, Sarah Connor, who appeared in the franchise’s first three movies and in 2009’s Termination Salvation, returning for the remake, noting that the matured hero is usually male.

“There are 50-year-old, 60-year-old guys out there killing bad guys,” he said.  “but there isn’t an example of that for women.”

Last month, Cameron opened up to ET’s Ash Crossan about the future of Terminator and how much the modern age of drones and artificial intelligence will form the apocalyptic world.

“We have to ask ourselves some fundamental questions: Is there something that can be said in this Terminator universe that hasn’t been said — and is relevant to the world we’re in right now?” he said. “There’s so much in our world that’s catching up to Terminator. We have killer robots, they’re called unpiloted combat drones … we’re on the cusp of artificial intelligence that could be equal of a human intelligence.”

“So we got to start asking ourselves what that means for our existence as a society and for our own sense of meaning,” he continued.

“This is where fiction comes in. It allows us to explore different possibilities, so obviously if we were to explore it in a Terminator, the context is all going to be very negative.”
