James Cameron has hinted that more Terminator films may well be on their way.

The director, who also brought us Avatar, is on the production team of Terminator: Dark Fate, the highly-anticipated upcoming feature in the Terminator franchise. Audiences have been instructed to ignore the disappointing third, fourth and fifth sequels and to view the film as a direct followup to the second film.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is due to return as the T-800 and Linda Hamilton will reprise her role as Sarah Connor. After 25 years, the feature has the right ingredients to be the perfect reunion film, and according to Cameron, it has the potential to be so much more.

“We spent several weeks breaking story and figuring out what type of story we wanted to tell, so we would have something to pitch,” Cameron told Deadline. “We rolled up our sleeves and started to break out the story and when we got a handle on something we looked at it as a three-film arc, so there is a greater story there to be told.”

He added: “If we get fortunate enough to make some money with Dark Fate, we know exactly where we can go with the subsequent films.”

Terminator: Dark Fate will be released October 23rd.
