We’ve seen many different actors take on the role of Doctor Who and we finally know the name of the latest star to follow in their footsteps. Ncuti Gatwa, best known for his work in the Netflix teen drama Sex Education, is set to become the next Time Lord.

BBC announced Gatwa’s casting on their social media channels, and their chief content officer Charlotte Moore released an official statement explaining why he felt like a perfect choice.

“Ncuti has an incredible dynamism, he’s a striking and fearless young actor whose talent and energy will set the world alight and take Doctor Who on extraordinary adventures under Russell T Davies’ new era,” said Moore.

Gatwa will make history as the first black actor to ever play the Doctor and he’s following in the footsteps of Jodie Whittaker, who became the first female Time Lord in 2017. He said he’s “honored, beyond excited, and of course a little bit scared” to play the Doctor in Season 14, which will see him join forces with returning showrunner Russell T Davies, who agreed to come back for the show’s 60th anniversary.

Before being cast in Doctor Who, Gatwa got his big break and received three BAFTA TV Awards nominations for his role in Sex Education. As for his movie credits, he’s soon set to appear in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, led by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.
