Mulan Proves She’s a Girl Worth Fighting For in the Remake’s Teaser

Yifei Liu in "Mulan"

The first-ever teaser trailer for the upcoming live-action remake of Mulan certainly looks as though it will bring honor to us all.

Disney released the clip during halftime of the FIFA Women’s World Cup final, which feels like a respectable bow to examples of strong women.

Chinese actress Liu Yifei does not disappoint as the young Asian woman who rejects her expected destiny of being a good wife in favor of surreptitiously joining the Imperial army under the guise of a man, so that her ageing father does not have to.

In addition to Yifei as the titular heroine, the film will star Donnie Yen as Mulan’s mentor Commander Tung, Jet Li as the Emperor of China, and Gong Li as the movie’s villain. Niki Caro, who is most famous for helming Whale Rider, has assumed director duties for the flick.

Unlike its live-action predecessors Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King, Mulan is not expected to be a scene-for-scene remake of the original animated version, which came out in 1998.

We’ll get down to business on March 27th 2020.
