The Lion King remake created quite a splash when it hit the theaters five years ago, and its prequel is on the way. Mufasa: The Lion King is coming our way just in time for Christmas, and Disney finally shared its first trailer with the world.

Mufasa: The Lion King will chronicle the origin story of Mufasa, one of the greatest kings of the Pride Lands. He was once an orphaned cup with nowhere to turn, before meeting a sympathetic lion Taka, and embarking on an expansive journey with an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny.

Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, John Kani, and Beyoncé will reprise their roles from the previous film, and they’ll be joined by Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Tiffany Boone, Mads Mikkelsen, Thandiwe Newton, Lennie James, and Blue Ivy Carter in her feature film debut.

Moonlight’s Barry Jenkins directed Mufasa, while Jeff Nathanson wrote the script. Lin-Manuel Miranda has been tapped to write the songs, and he said he’s humbled to be a part of the incredible musical legacy of this beloved franchise.

The Lion King’ has an incredible musical legacy with music from some of the greatest songwriters around… It’s been a joy working alongside Barry Jenkins to bring Mufasa’s story to life, and we can’t wait for audiences to experience this film in theaters,” said Miranda in a statement.

Mufasa: The Lion King is eying the Christmas release date, and it will arrive in theatres on December 20.
