“Eastern Promises 2” to Start Production in 2019

Viggo Mortensen in "Eastern Promises" (2007)

2019 seems to be the year that all those promised sequels come to fruition.

And one such film might even have “promises” in its name.

12 years after David Cronenberg offered us insight into the seedy world of the Russian mafia, it looks like we are getting part two of Eastern Promises.

The 2007 film received multiple award nominations, including one for Best Actor for its star, Viggo Mortensen.

It is likely that Cronenberg will not return to helm the sequel, nor will it feature the Green Book actor in the leading role, according to screenwriter Steven Knight.

“It is like fishing, where you leave it out there,” Knight told Collider. “And it’s been out there for a while. It went through permutations in the sense of, how do you follow Viggo? We’ve been through that and we’ve moved on and now we’re in a position where I will say ‘watch this space,’ we’re close to getting into production.”

We hope he keeps his promise.
