Many of our favorite TV shows returned for a new season this year, but we were also introduced to some pretty amazing newcomers. Here are five brand-new shows that won over the critics and the audience in 2021.

Squid Game

No other new show created more buzz than this South Korean survival drama about a group of people taking part in deadly games for a chance to win an enormous cash prize. Squid Game was such a huge sensation that it became Netflix’s most-watched series of all time.

Shadow and Bone

Another series that premiered on Netflix this year, Shadow and Bone renewed interest in the fantasy genre and it has a great world-building potential because it’s based on a hit book series by Leigh Bardugo.

WandaVision

Marvel’s collaboration with Disney+ is a gift that keeps on giving. If we had to pick the best show they gave us this year, the crown would definitely go to WandaVision.

Hacks

This critically acclaimed comedy about the legendary Las Vegas comedian teaming up with a millennial writer became a huge hit with the critics and went on to win three Emmys this year.

Only Murders in the Building

Speaking of critically acclaimed comedies that we couldn’t stop watching, Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez made us laugh out loud as three true crime fans trying to solve a murder mystery in their apartment building.
