Barbie made quite a splash when it hit the theatres back in July, and we’ve seen it break several records, but its latest box office milestone is the most impressive one yet. Greta Gerwig’s acclaimed comedy about our favorite doll managed to become the highest-grossing film of 2023 after less than two months in the theaters.

Barbie crossed the $1.365 billion mark at the global box office this past weekend, and its earnings are still rising. By doing so, it managed to beat The Super Mario Bros. Movie to become the highest-grossing film of the year so far.

This is quite an impressive feat considering that Barbie was banned in several countries and it had tough competition at the summer box office in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which also premiered on July 21.

Barbie knocked it out of the park during its opening weekend and scored the biggest domestic opening ever for a female-directed film. It later became Warner Bros.’ highest-grossing film and the fastest to reach $1 billion, breaking the record previously held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.

In addition to winning over audiences, Barbie was met with critical acclaim following its release and it received praise for its performances, visual appeal, and humorous take on a wide range of different topics, from philosophy to feminism.
