Eleven years after bidding us farewell, Will & Grace returned to our screens in 2017 to put the “yay” in “gay”.

The comedy series about a gay lawyer, Will Truman, and his Jewish interior designer best friend, Grace Adler, seemed more relevant than ever when it was reintroduced, covering topics that the original run never had to contend with — like Netflix and dating apps.

All four main cast members — Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Megan Mullaly, and Sean Hayes — returned to reprise their characters for the reboot.

But, unlike the number of drinks that Karen Walker can consume, the show does have a limit to its seasons.

“We think of the Will & Grace reboot episodes the way Karen Walker thinks of martinis – 51 is not enough, 53 is too many. That is why, after consulting with the cast, we all have decided this will be the final season of Will & Grace,” creators Max Mutchnick, David Kohan, and director and executive producer James Burrows said in a statement.

Will & Grace will begin its third (or is that 11th?) and final season in the first half of 2020.

The former Friends star has been tapped for a recurring role as Grace Adler’s (Debra Messing) new love interest for the upcoming season of the Will & Grace revival. 

The revival’s second season will be the comedy series’ 10th season overall. Earlier this year, co-creator Max Mutchnick told Deadline that they’re “trying to open up the series this year. Last year was about coming back and seeing how the audience was going to respond, and they embraced the show, and that was thrilling. Now, we need to move forward.”

This means that season two will bring with it new things, including new love interests and relationship to the still single Grace and her roommate, Will (Eric McCormack). 

Rounding up guests appearances for the upcoming season are Chelsea Handler and the returning Alec Baldwin and Mary McCormack.

Will & Grace returns October 4 on NBC.

Will, Grace, Jack, and Karen spent 11 years off the air before producers decided to top up Karen’s gin and get the original cast of Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Sean Hayes, and Megan Mullaly back together for a skit prior to the 2016 US election.

So popular was the mini-episode, that an entire season was established to offer a fresh take on being gay, single, and just generally hilarious in today’s dating app, social media obsessed, Netflix climate

In addition to a third season, season 2’s episode count has been increased from 13 to 18.

NBC entertainment chairman, Bob Greenblatt, has said, “We can’t get enough of Will & Grace and 23 more episodes is music to my ears. We’re eternally grateful that Debra, Eric, Sean and Megan feel the same way and wanted to keep this good thing going. I’m overwhelmed by the euphoric response the new show has received from the press and the audience.”
