Many of our favorite TV shows returned for a new season this year, but we were also introduced to some pretty amazing newcomers. Here are five brand-new shows that won over the critics and the audience in 2021.

Squid Game

No other new show created more buzz than this South Korean survival drama about a group of people taking part in deadly games for a chance to win an enormous cash prize. Squid Game was such a huge sensation that it became Netflix’s most-watched series of all time.

Shadow and Bone

Another series that premiered on Netflix this year, Shadow and Bone renewed interest in the fantasy genre and it has a great world-building potential because it’s based on a hit book series by Leigh Bardugo.

WandaVision

Marvel’s collaboration with Disney+ is a gift that keeps on giving. If we had to pick the best show they gave us this year, the crown would definitely go to WandaVision.

Hacks

This critically acclaimed comedy about the legendary Las Vegas comedian teaming up with a millennial writer became a huge hit with the critics and went on to win three Emmys this year.

Only Murders in the Building

Speaking of critically acclaimed comedies that we couldn’t stop watching, Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez made us laugh out loud as three true crime fans trying to solve a murder mystery in their apartment building.

We can always count on MTV Movie & TV Awards to celebrate fan-favorite projects, and that was certainly the case this year. WandaVision was the biggest winner of the night with four awards, and it was closely followed by another Marvel show The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

WandaVision managed to beat The Boys, Bridgerton, Cobra Kai, and Emily in Paris to win one of the biggest awards of the night—best show. Its star Elizabeth Olsen and Kathryn Hahn won the trophies for the best performance in a show and best villain and shared the award for the best fight.

To make the whole thing even more impressive, WandaVision wasn’t even the only Disney+ show dominating the winners’ list. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was a close second with two wins—best hero (Anthony Mackie) and best duo (Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan).

Movie categories didn’t offer any clear leaders, as major awards went to different projects. To All the Boys: Always and Forever was crowned as the best movie, while Chadwick Boseman was posthumously awarded for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

The 2021 MTV Movie & TV Awards were hosted by Leslie Jones, with broadcast taking place on May 16th and 17th.
