Universal Pictures and Amasia Entertainment have teamed to bring us The Green Hornet and Kato.

The deal was announced on Thursday by Peter Cramer, president of Universal Pictures.

Cramer said in a statement, “The Green Hornet is one of the most iconic and beloved superhero tales ever created, and it has entertained generations of fans in every form of storytelling. We are thrilled to be partnering with Michael, Bradley, and the entire Amasia team to launch an exciting new cinematic world for Britt Reid, Kato, and the Black Beauty, and we can’t wait to share it with global audiences soon.”

Amasia co-founders Michael Helfant and Bradley Gallo won the rights to the film after a highly competitive bidding war.

Said Gallo: “The team at Universal completely understands the creative direction we want for The Green Hornet brand.  Their sensibilities and relationships with writers, directors, and actors are exceptional. And, the confluence of America and Asia is so important. Who better to partner with than a company that has such a major presence on both continents? We also know that Universal will align with our ‘film geek’ sensibilities and offer up a vision which respects the iconic world of The Green Hornet.”

Variety was first to report that Universal Pictures is remaking The Night of the Hunter. The original 1955 adaption starred Robert Mitchum as an evil religious fanatic, con man and murderer who marries a widow and terrorizes her children to tell him where their dad hid the family’s fortune.

The outlet has confirmed that the feature will be penned by Operation Finale scribe Matt Orton and that it is expected to be a contemporary version of the original thriller, rather than a period piece.

Cats is quickly running out of all 9 of its lives.

Tom Hooper’s adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s award-winning musical is more of a mess than that ball of yarn your kitten got hold of, with its own studio now even turning its back on the film…

Each year, as we enter awards season, studios promote their films that they think stand a good chance at walking away with an Oscar, Golden Globe, or some other coveted trophy. The practice, aimed at voters in the various awards, is termed “For Your Consideration,” as a friendly suggestion to watch the movies they put billions of dollars behind.

Despite having a $100 million budget and source material that has won countless accolades, Hooper only managed to finish Cats just hours before its premiere on December 16th. The less-than-stellar product — coupled with an extremely poor box office opening — prompted Universal Pictures to swap out the original version with a new one that had improved visual effects.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ruled that the updated version would be eligible for Oscar contention, but Universal appears to have lost all faith. It has decided to remove Cats from the list of Oscar contenders on its FYC page, meaning it won’t be submitted for categories such as Best Visual Effects or Best Original Song.

What a cat-astrophe.
