]]>The 2019 ceremony did not have an official master or mistress of ceremonies after Kevin Hart stepped down in the wake of criticism over previous homophobic remarks he had made.
The result was an Academy Awards that felt slightly disjointed, with notable names instead coming up on stage to present the different categories and nominees for Best Picture.
One such star was Trevor Noah, who had the honor of introducing those in the audience and at home to the first-ever comic book film nominated for the prestigious award, Black Panther.
The Daily Show host revealed that people from around the world constantly come up to him and say “Wakanda Forever” because he comes from Africa — despite the fact that Wakanda is a fictional country.
“Growing up as a young boy in Wakanda, I would see King T’Challa flying over our village, and he would remind me of a great Xhosa phrase, ‘Abelungu abazi ubu ndiyaxoka,’ which means ‘In times like these, we are stronger when we fight together than when we try to fight apart,'” he said.
Noah’s powerful message and use of his native language drew cheers from the audience at the Dolby Theatre, but his South African countrymen giggled on Twitter.
Those with an understanding of Xhosa knew that the comedian had really said, “White people don’t know I’m lying,” with a totally straight face.

But that is the fate that has befallen Trevor Noah.
The Daily Show host ventured to South Africa recently to host the Global Citizens Festival which saw the likes of Beyoncé, Jay Z, Usher, Wizkid, Chris Martin, Pharrell, and Ed Sheeran perform as part of an initiative to eliminate poverty by 2030.
A combination of traveling and performing hosting duties during the 12-hour-long event meant that the 34-year-old — who previously revealed that he had bruised his vocal cords — lost his voice.
Doctors have ordered him to stay silent, warning that if he doesn’t give his voice a break, he might require surgery.
As a result, Trevor has now canceled his 8 remaining stand-up shows for the year and hosted Tuesday’s episode of The Daily Show solely through hand gestures as his news team read from his teleprompter!
Get well soon, Trevor!

Empire star Taraji P. Henson wrote about Cardi B, saying that she identifies with the “Bodak Yellow” rapper because she too knows that “when you are cool with who you are, no one can use it against you.”
The Daily Show host Trevor Noah was exalted by Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o (who will be portraying his mother in the film based on his autobiography, Born a Crime). She referred to the South African comedian as “a fantastic storyteller who has always been a defier of rules and is always reaching out: across cultures, continents and boundaries.”
