]]>Countries around the world have begun to submit their entries for contention in the Best Foreign Language Film category, which has now been renamed as Best International Feature Film.
According to the rules of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, an eligible movie is defined as a feature-length motion picture produced outside of the US with a predominantly non-English dialogue track and can include animated and documentary features.
Finland and The Netherlands are the latest to submit their films, which are Stupid Young Heart and Instinct, respectively.
They join Belgium, Germany, Sweden, Iran, Japan, the Palestinian Authority, South Korea, Morocco, Brazil, and others, which have already announced their entries.
All submissions must have been released theatrically in their respective countries between October 1st, 2018 and September 30th, 2019.
The successor to Mexico’s Roma will be revealed at the 92nd Academy Awards on February 9th 2020.

]]>You may remember back in 2016 when the Academy Awards nominees all looked a little similar.
The 20 names announced as nominees among the four main acting categories were all Caucasian, prompting allegations of a lack of diversity within The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The incident spurred the campaign #OscarsSoWhite, which in turn pushed The Academy to transform its membership.
That practice is being followed through in the announcement of its latest batch of members.
Of the 842 industry professionals who have been invited to join The Academy, 50% are female and 29% are non-white.
They include big names such as Lady Gaga, Claire Foy, Sterling K. Brown, Mark Ronson, Jamie Bell, Jennifer Ehle, Tom Holland, Damian Lewis, Elisabeth Moss, Archie Panjabi, Amanda Peet, and Alexander Skarsgard.
The new additions have likely caused the number of members to surpass 9,000, while 8,000 will be eligible to vote in the upcoming Oscars next February.

Everyone most eagerly awaits the announcement of the host for the Academy Awards ceremony.
And now the wait is over!
“Welcome to the family”… Kevin Hart!
The comedian may not have starred in much Oscar fare himself, but is well-known to audiences for films such as Ride Along, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Night School.
In an Instagram post, the 39-year-old revealed that this has been one of his goals for a very long time.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences confirmed the news, welcoming Kevin to the family.

]]>Earlier this year the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that it would be introducing a new category — Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film.
The announcement drew ire from those within the film industry, with Code Black actor, Rob Lowe, saying it signified the death of the film industry:
The film business passed away today with the announcement of the “popular” film Oscar. It had been in poor health for a number of years. It is survived by sequels, tent-poles, and vertical integration.
— Rob Lowe (@RobLowe) August 8, 2018
And comedian Andy Richter seemingly sussing out the real reason behind the move:
Finally the Oscars will be giving a statue based on popularity so that those poor mountains of box office money won’t be lonely anymore
— Andy Richter (@AndyRichter) August 8, 2018
Following the immense backlash, the Academy decided to put the category on ice, citing the need for further discussion.
Now Academy president, John Bailey, has said that the category — which was introduced in response to Oscar’s falling ratings — is not dead and buried.
“The board reconsidered and tabled it, which is not to say that the idea is dead,” he said. “Even after a stake was driven through its heart, there’s still interest.”
Bailey believes that the new category will not just include blockbusters such as Black Panther, but more artistic fare like Roma by director Alfonso Cuarón.
We wonder if the announcement will be more popular second time around…

]]>The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced last month that it would be introducing a new category to the 2019 Academy Awards, entitled “Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film.”
The introduction sparked criticism from many within the industry, including Code Black actor, Rob Lowe, who signaled it as the death of the film industry:

And now, it appears as though the Academy is having second thoughts…
“The Academy recognized that implementing any new award nine months into the year creates challenges for films that have already been released,” AMPAS said in a statement. “There has been a wide range of reactions to the introduction of a new award, and we recognize the need for further discussion with our members.”
One change which will remain, however, is the handing out of some awards during commercial breaks to make the ceremony broadcast shorter.
The 91st annual Academy Awards will be held at the Dolby Theatre on the 24th of February 2019.
