Taika Waititi still has his hands in the Star Wars universe as he’s set to direct and co-write a new Star Wars film with 1917 scribe Krysty Wilson-Cairns.

Disney made the announcement on Monday and confirmed that a new untitled Star Wars TV series from Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland is still in the works at Disney Plus.

Back in January, it was rumored that Waititi was developing a Star Wars film after he directed the season finale of the Disney Plus Star Wars series The Mandalorian.

When Variety asked Waititia about the project in February he said, “Are there discussions about the ‘Star Wars’ film? Like, yeah, I discussed with my friends in 1996 how cool ‘Star Wars’ was. I think people see me hanging out with people, especially with ‘Star Wars,’ and think I’m having some big discussions about it. I would f—ing love to.…If it was right. I would want to do any kind of movie if it made sense, and if it felt not like career suicide.”

It’s still unclear if this film will be one of Disney’s three untitled Star Wars films that are supposed to be released December 2022, 2024, and 2026, or if Waititi’s project is separate.

This project will be the first official Star Wars feature film to be confirmed after Games of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss turned down their deal to make a series of Star Wars movies last October.

Tony Gilroy, the co-writer of Rogue One, will write the pilot and he’ll helm several episodes of the series with showrunner Stephen Schiff.

The series is still untitled, and it will follow Cassian Andor during the early days of the Rebellion’s battle with the Empire. Diego Luna is set to reprise his role as Andor and Alan Tudyk will reprise his role as deadpan droid K-2SO.

The series was announced last year and was described by Diseny+ as a “spy thriller.” The platform indicated that the show would debut in 2021, but with the coronavirus, production has been halted.

Disney+ has had huge success with the Star Wars series; The Mandalorian is set for a second season and there will be a new series that will focus on a young Obi Wan-Kenobi with Ewan McGregor reprising his role.

December’s The Rise of Skywalker, which grossed over $1 billion worldwide, wrapped up the Skywalker saga that lasted 9 films. The new saga is set to begin in 2022.

Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were originally announced as the ones to lead the next Star Wars installment, but in August last year they changed their minds and pulled out, citing their $200 million deal with Netflix as filling up their schedule.

It now appears as though Waititi is in negotiations for the role with LucasFilm and Disney.

For what it’s worth, the New Zealander, whose film Jojo Rabbit just earned 6 Oscar nominations, is remaining mum. He posted Fleetwood Mac’s cover for their album Rumours on Twitter.

It appears as though Netflix may be the downfall of Star Wars.

Let us explain…

In August, Game of Thrones creators, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, signed an overall deal with Netflix.

The agreement, which is reportedly worth a 9-digit figure, will allow the pair to write, produce, and direct both series and films.

But, as exciting as that deal was, it has now apparently forced D&D to pull out of another exciting project — Star Wars.

Benioff and Weiss had been hired to create the new trilogy in the franchise that would succeed The Skywalker Saga that wraps up this year.

“We love Star Wars. When George Lucas built it, he built us too. Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything,” the duo said in a statement. “There are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects. So we are regretfully stepping away.”

Time will tell whether this setback will postpone the new Star Wars trilogy which was set to commence in 2022.

With less than two months to go until the long-awaited film opens in theatres, Disney and LucasFilm have released its final trailer. With hopes already high for the ninth installment in the Star Wars series, the clip does not disappoint!

Daisy Ridley returns as Rey and we see the last known Jedi in the very first shot. The Rise of Skywalker is set a year after the events depicted in The Last Jedi as the remaining members of the Resistance come up against the First Order yet again. As this is the final piece of the Skywalker saga, the ancient conflict between the Jedi and the Sith reaches its climax…

In addition to Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, and Billie Lourd will also be reprising their roles. Leftover footage from The Force Awakens has also been used to posthumously include the late Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa. Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, Keri Russell, Matt Smith, and Dominic Monaghan join the film as new additions.

Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy has revealed that releasing two Star Wars movies a year is a mistake.

Since the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story, the term “Star Wars Fatigue” has been thrown around. The feature was proportionately the lowest-grossing and lowest rated of the franchise and critics and fans began speculating why the movie missed the mark. One of the reasons people suggested was that people are growing tired of new movies being released back to back. It takes away from the excitement.

Now, in an interview with Empire, Kennedy has revealed that releasing two movies a year just isn’t going to work.

“We don’t have a crystal ball,” she explained. “We tried to look at Solo and see if we could do two movies a year and we found, ‘Hmm that’s not going to work’, so we backed off a little.”

She also shared that they have lots of ideas in the works and “lots of different stories”. For now, though, the new features will be spread out.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be released on December 18.

At the end of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, the rebellion wins the day and the evil galactic Empire is defeated. When we return in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, however, we learn that its spirit and power lives on in form of the First Order. What happened in those 30 years that allowed it? Looks like The Mandalorian will provide some answers.

Speaking with EW, Jon Favreau, the executive producer of the upcoming Disney+ series, and Dave Filoni, the show’s director, shed light on the place of the show within the franchise.

“So somehow, things weren’t necessarily managed as well as they could have been if [the galaxy] ended up in hot water again like that”, said Filoni.

According to them, it seems things have not gone so well for the good guys of the galaxy as The Order is pretty powerful and well equipped by the beginning of The Force Awakens, and the new show will deal with this time period.

So what can the fans expect? It seems the show will depict the rise to power of the First Order in broad lines, even if it will not dive into specific stories like the backstory of Supreme Leader Snoke. the franchise’s cannon has already supplied fans with bits of what happened and the new show may tie the strings together.

There is an enormous amount of pressure when a famous series comes to an end, and it doesn’t always go that well.

With Game of Thrones coming to a disappointing conclusion in May after 8 seasons, it is understandable that other franchises are feeling the heat.

Like Star Wars.

The current trilogy will wrap up in December with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

But its star Daisy Ridley has assured fans that the ending will be far better than that of the adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s book series.

“I couldn’t tell you what I’ve done for the past month, like six weeks… except watch Game of Thrones. I think this ending will be less controversial,” she said at Disney’s D23 convention.

The Star Wars trilogy to follow will actually be written by Game of Thrones creators, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be out on December 20th, 2019.

Disney has confirmed that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are working on aStar Wars movie that is due out in 2022.

The upcoming film in the franchise, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, will conclude the current trilogy when it is released in December.

A new trilogy will begin in 2022, with subsequent films coming out in 2024 and 2026, respectively.

“We’re hard at work already, but we felt three years was the proper amount of time to not only take a breather and reset, but to gear up for the next film’s release,” said Disney CEO Bob Iger.

“We did a deal with David Benioff and Dan Weiss, who are famous for Game of Thrones, and the next movie that we release will be theirs, and we’re not saying anything more about that.”

The secretive film will hit screens on December 16th, 2022.

From the Iron Throne to the Deathstar.

After ending their 8-year journey in Westeros, the creators of Game of Thrones are planning to head to a galaxy far, far away.
