It was too good to be true…

So much excitement surrounded the Game of Thrones prequel that was being developed by HBO.

Set thousands of years before the events depicted in the Emmy Award-winning series which wrapped in May, the prospective show was being written by the creator of A Song of Ice and Fire himself, George R.R. Martin, and Jane Goldman who penned Kingsman.

According to the official description, the series planned to “chronicle the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend, only one thing is for sure: it’s not the story we think we know.”

Naomi Watts has signed on to the project, along with Miranda Richardson, Jamie Campbell Bower, Georgie Henley, Naomi Ackie, and Denise Gough.

A pilot episode was shot in Belfast in June, but HBO has now decided to, alas, not pick up the series…

Yet, hope remains for Westeros fans.

The network is reportedly close to ordering a pilot for a second spin-off series that focuses on the Targaryen civil war.

Despite the intense reaction that the final season of Game of Thrones received, a director from the series would still consider returning to Westeros.

Two prequels set in George R. R. Martin’s world are currently in development. One will take place thousands of years before the Westeros we are familiar with and will chronicle the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. The other is believed to focus on the Targaryen’s civil war.

“If asked, I would definitely consider it,” says Neil Marshall of working on the prequel(s). “It’s a great world to work in. I’d love to go back to Belfast and work with the amazing cast and crew. It was an amazing creative environment and if the team has managed to create that magic, then I’d go back for that alone.”

The final season of Thrones received enormous backlash from fans who felt that characters had gone entirely off-script.

“I don’t necessarily think the backlash was justified, but it was unavoidable,” said Marshall who helmed Blackwater and The Watchers on the Wall. “You were never going to be able to please everybody, and when you’ve got fans as loyal as dedicated as those fans are, we’re talking millions of people with opinions globally. I think they did an amazing job and endings are always tricky? How do you end these stories? You’ve got to end them somewhere, but how do you do it?”

Let’s hope the prequels are more satisfying.

Are you as curious about the forthcoming Game of Thrones prequel as we are?

George R. R. Martin is here for us!

The author of A Song of Ice and Fire, who is also writing and executive producing the prequel, spoke to Entertainment Weekly, where be revealed how many kingdoms we can expect, which families will appear, and title possibilities.

While no official name has been locked down as yet (though Blood Moon seems to be the working title), Martin has put his hand up for The Long Night.

“I heard a suggestion that it could be called The Longest Night, which is a variant I wouldn’t mind,” he said.

What we do know about the prequel is that it is set around 5,000 years prior to the events in Game of Thrones, when the altercation with the White Walkers went down.

But that’s not to say that we won’t get to see our favorite families.

“The Starks will definitely be there,” Martin said. “The Lannisters aren’t there yet, but Casterly Rock is certainly there; it’s like the Rock of Gibraltar. It’s actually occupied by the Casterlys — for whom it’s still named after in the time of Game of Thrones.

According to Martin, there will be far more kingdoms than the 7 in GOT.

“If you go back further, then there are nine kingdoms, and 12 kingdoms, and eventually you get back to where there are a hundred kingdoms — petty kingdoms — and that’s the era we’re talking about here.”

The prequel is currently filming in Northern Ireland, while Martin is (still) writing the 6th Ice and Fire novel. Hooray!

Is anything ever truly dead in the universe of Game of Thrones?

With the 8th and final season of the multiple-award-winning series set to hit screens in 2019, HBO last week announced that it had ordered the pilot for a prequel.

The as-yet-unnamed project will be written by Jane Goldman who penned the screenplay for Kingsman: The Secret Service and take place thousands of years before Jon Snow had the opportunity to know nothing.

But, the man who created the entire world of Westeros, has now revealed that one of the potential prequels has already hit the chopping block.

“If you have been following along, you know that we started with four, and eventually went to five,” George R. R. Martin wrote in a blog post. “One of those has been shelved, I am given to understand… but that does not mean the others are dead.”

The author continued by saying, “Three more Game of Thrones prequels, set in different periods and featuring different characters and storylines, remain in active development. Everything I am told indicates that we could film at least one more pilot, and maybe more than one, in the years to come. We do have an entire world and 10 of thousands of years of history to play with, after all. But this is television, so nothing is certain.”

Perhaps the scrapped prequel will make its return in Whitewalker form…
