Live-action remakes have been coming at us like a flurry of spells, but the entertainment company is now creating a film around one of its most fearsome characters — Cruella De Vil.

This would not be the first time that Disney has given the villain her own feature film.

Angelina Jolie starred in 2014’s Maleficent, which gave backstory and context to the evil fairy, who will be further explored in the sequel Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, out later this year.

101 Dalmatian’s super villain is the next in line to receive her own movie, with Emma Stone bringing the puppy-napper to life.

Reports now claim that another Emma — Emma Thompson — is also in talks to star, though her role has not yet been revealed.

Tony McNamara from The Favourite wrote the latest version of the script, which is being directed by Craig Gillespie who helmed I, Tonya.

Three strong funny women!

Emma Thompson made her hosting debut on Saturday Night Live this weekend, but she didn’t do it alone.

The Sense and Sensibility actress was joined on stage by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

The episode took place on the eve of Mother’s Day in the US, and so the trio, who are mothers themselves, decided to pay tribute to the glorious and exhausting practice that is motherhood.

Mothers don’t always mean what they say (or say what they mean), so Emma, Amy, and Tina graciously helped us out by doing a little mom-translation.

“When a mom says ‘you look tired,’ what they really mean is ‘you look bad,’” they explained. “When she say, ‘Son, you know I love you just the way you are,’ she’s actually saying, ‘I’m bored of waiting for you to tell me you’re gay.’ When she says, ‘I love all my kids the same.’ What she means is, ‘Your sister is winning.’”

No matter what moms say, we still love them!

The 60-year-old has no less than 17 writing credits to her name, including screenplays for successful films such as Sense and Sensibility, Nanny McPhee, and Bridget Jones’s Baby.

And now, the Academy Award winner is taking a stand for writers throughout Hollywood.

Speaking to The Guardian, Emma revealed that films often begin shooting before the script is even done.

“One of the reasons is that they need stars – big stars – who work all the time and have to be fitted into timescales,” she said. “What happens is there’ll be an idea for a story. It will be in development, and then suddenly two of the big stars come free, and everyone says, ‘right, let’s shoot it, we’ll work it out as we shoot’. One thing I know, after 30 years of doing this, is you can’t work it out while you shoot… It always ends up just making things so much more difficult in post-production.”

The Love, Actually star says, “I know that I don’t want to make films with unfinished scripts.”

Her next project aims to change that as it will be a collaboration with her husband Greg Wise, based on a script they have worked on for 7 years, called Last Christmas.

In a career spanning 36 years, the actress and screenwriter has won 2 Academy Awards (making her the only person to do so for both acting and writing), and dozens of BAFTA Awards.

But the 59-year-old knows all too well about the Hollywood machine and she is none too happy.

Speaking to Vulture, the star of The Children Act said, “It’s fantastic being this age. I’m old. We’re constantly watching films where older men have wonderful roles and older women really don’t. But I’m a character actor, don’t forget. If you’ve got form and you’re a character actor, you’re much better off because you’re not fighting the way you once looked.”

The actress also shared her frustration regarding the types of films being made.

“I was angry about the lies and fairy tales that were sold to young women—that romance was the be-all and end-all,” she said whilst at the Toronto International Film Festival. “It’s so annoying to be female and consistently going, ‘Have I got to see a f**king story again about a guy who does things that I’ve already seen a guy do a million times?’ So I’m bored.’”

But there is hope.

“I find it incredibly exciting at the moment because this new generation of girls — Generation Z, I believe — are challenging me all the time. I’m learning new things,” she explained.

If there’s anyone who could change the dynamic — it’s Emma Thompson.
