Netflix announced that the dark comedy starring Drew Barrymore as a real-estate-broker-turned-zombie and her on-screen husband Timothy Olyphant has been canceled after three seasons.

“The world had never known a ‘zom-com’ until Santa Clarita Diet, and we’re indebted to creator Victor Fresco for bringing this idea to Netflix,” Netflix said in a statement.

“To their endless credit, the incredible Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant were totally game, with an uncanny knack for comedy that brought Sheila and Joel Hammond to vibrant life, even though one of them was undead. We’re grateful to Victor, Drew, and Timothy, along with fellow executive producers Tracy Katsky, Aaron Kaplan, Chris Miller and Ember Truesdell and the terrific cast, including Liv Hewson and Skyler Gisondo, and crew for three hilarious seasons for Netflix members to discover for years to come.”

Olyphant seemed unbothered by the cancellation, saying in a statement: ” I loved working on this show. I’m going to continue coming in and doing scenes. If they don’t want to film it, that’s up to them.”

Barrymore added, “Of all of the characters I’ve ever been, Sheila Hammond is one of my favorites. She and Joel were an amazing couple, who had shared goals. And I am lucky to have worked alongside Tim Olyphant. It was an honor to get to do something so delightful. Sheila lives forever in me. And I am grateful to Victor Fresco, who created a world so unique.”

News of the cancelation comes one month after the debut of the show’s third season. While Netflix famously does not release viewership information, according to Deadline the show has appeared on various Top 10 binge/streaming rankings.

Drew’s intense filming schedule around the world means that she often has to leave her eldest daughter, Olive, for extended periods at a time.

In an Instagram post, the 43-year-old has now detailed just how she manages to do it all.

The actress states how she consciously conveys to Olive how she loves her job in an effort to empower her girls with the belief that working is positive and necessary.

In a second post on the social media platform, Drew also pays tribute to her ex-husband, Will Kopelman, for his influence on the girls’ lives.

Drew and Will got married in 2012 but finalized their divorce in 2016. Despite their separation, the pair still maintains a great parenting relationship, with Drew thanking her ex for providing stability in their daughters’ lives and enabling her to pursue her career whilst being a mom.

Olive and Frankie are two lucky kids.
