We didn’t get a Doctor Who Christmas special this year, but fans of this show still had a reason to celebrate. BBC dropped a fun teaser trailer ahead of the show’s 60th anniversary, offering a perfect blend of new and familiar faces.

The new taser sees David Tennant return to the beloved sci-fi series, taking on the role of the Fourteenth Doctor, and he’s not the only Doctor Who veteran making a comeback. The teaser gave us a major nostalgia overload because it also sees Catherine Tate return as Donna Noble.

Tate famously left the Doctor Who universe behind after Donna’s memories about her time with the Doctor were erased, but it seems she’s still haunted by them. “Sometimes, I think there’s something missing. Like I had something lovely and it’s gone,” she says in the teaser.

In addition to reuniting us with some of the old fan favorites, the teaser also introduced us to the Fifteenth Doctor, played by the Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa.

Doctor Who will return to BBC in November, in the form of the three-hour-long 60th-anniversary special. Gatwa will take over from Tennant following this TV spectacle, and give us his own take on the Time Lord in Season 14, set to premiere in 2024.

We’ve seen many different actors take on the role of Doctor Who and we finally know the name of the latest star to follow in their footsteps. Ncuti Gatwa, best known for his work in the Netflix teen drama Sex Education, is set to become the next Time Lord.

BBC announced Gatwa’s casting on their social media channels, and their chief content officer Charlotte Moore released an official statement explaining why he felt like a perfect choice.

“Ncuti has an incredible dynamism, he’s a striking and fearless young actor whose talent and energy will set the world alight and take Doctor Who on extraordinary adventures under Russell T Davies’ new era,” said Moore.

Gatwa will make history as the first black actor to ever play the Doctor and he’s following in the footsteps of Jodie Whittaker, who became the first female Time Lord in 2017. He said he’s “honored, beyond excited, and of course a little bit scared” to play the Doctor in Season 14, which will see him join forces with returning showrunner Russell T Davies, who agreed to come back for the show’s 60th anniversary.

Before being cast in Doctor Who, Gatwa got his big break and received three BAFTA TV Awards nominations for his role in Sex Education. As for his movie credits, he’s soon set to appear in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, led by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.

Whovians are gonna be hoping for some time travel skills when they discover when next we’ll be seeing the Doctor.

The 13th season of Doctor Who saw the series take on a whole new landscape as we were introduced to a female Doctor for the very first time.

Jodie Whitaker’s turn as the Time Lord proved so popular that her debut as the Doctor succeeded her predecessors including David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Peter Capaldi.

With Jodie and her companions capturing audiences’ hearts and imaginations, it is disappointing that The Doctor won’t be visiting in 2019.

The official Doctor Who Twitter account confirmed that the next season starring the Gallifreyan will only hit screens in 2020.

That said, The Doctor will be returning in a New Year’s Day special on January 1st, 2019.

If ever we needed a TARDIS to time travel…

If you want something done right — give it to a woman.

After 13 years on air — and 5 incarnations — Doctor Who has received its highest-ever ratings.

The series, which follows the Time Lord through various realms and eras, was rebooted in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston portraying the 9th Doctor.

Since then, the role of the Doctor has been played by David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Peter Capaldi.

Producers decided to take a different direction following Peter’s departure last year by making the 13th Doctor a woman!

The risk now seems to have paid off as Jodie Whitaker’s debut as The Doctor on the 7th of October was the most-watched, earning 10.9 million viewers.

It trumps the initial reboot of the show where Eccleston’s introduction to audiences scored 10.8 million viewers.

Jodie’s debut also eclipses Tennant’s at 8 million, Smith who garnered 7.7 million, and Capaldi with 6.8 million.

Well done, Jodie!
