This year’s award season is slowly nearing its final phase and BAFTA Awards set the stage for what’s to come on Sunday night. All Quiet on the Western Front was named the best film at this year’s ceremony and walked away with a total of seven accolades.

The German anti-war drama entered the ceremony as one of the front-runners with a total of 14 nods. It tied the record, previously held by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, to become the most-nominated non-English language film in BAFTA’s history, and it managed to walk away with half the awards it was in the running for.

In addition to winning the best film, All Quiet came out victorious in six more categories: best director, best adapted screenplay, best cinematography, best original score, best sound, and best film not in the English language.

It was also a big night for The Banshees of Inisherin, which was named the outstanding British film, beating the tough competition that included Aftersun, Living, and Empire of Light. It was one of two films to win four BAFTAs on Sunday, along with Elvis.

Royal Festival Hall in London served as the venue for the 76th British Academy Film Awards on February 19, while Richard E. Grant and Alison Hammond hosted the ceremony.

The British Academy Film Awards returned to London on Sunday night, adding another fun chapter to this year’s award season. It was a big night for Dune, which walked away with a total of five trophies, while The Power of the Dog won the BAFTA for best film.

Jane Campion’s western drama was competing against Belfast, Dune, Don’t Look Up, and Licorice Pizza for the night’s biggest award, and it managed to come out victorious. Campion also made history as the third woman to win the award for the best director.

When it comes to Dune, Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic came into the night with 11 nominations and managed to win five crafts awards, including best cinematography, production design, special visual effects, sound, and original score.

Acting categories brought several predictable wins our way, starting with Will Smith collecting the award for best actor with King Richard. The real shocker came in the best actress category, with the underdog Joanna Scanlan beating tough competition to win a trophy for After Love.

The 75th British Academy Film Awards returned to the Royal Albert Hall in London on March 13th, and Rebel Wilson served as the host for the first time.

Several award ceremonies took place last week, setting the course for the upcoming Oscars—including the BAFTA Awards. Nomadland was the biggest winner of the night and took home the best film award, while Promising Young Woman was named as the outstanding British film.

Nomadland’s win at the BAFTAs cements its statutes as the Oscar frontrunner. In addition to being crowned as the best film, Chloé Zhao made history as the first woman of color to pick up the award for best director. Frances McDormand was named as the best actress, while Joshua James Richards collected the trophy for best cinematography.

Promising Young Woman was also one of the biggest winners of the night with two wins—outstanding British film and best original screenplay for Emerald Fennell. The Father, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Soul, and Sound of Metal were also awarded two trophies each.

When it comes to acting categories, Anthony Hopkins set the record as the oldest leading actor winner with his role in The Father. Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah) and Yuh-Jung Youn (Minari) picked up awards for their supporting performances.

BAFTA Awards were held on April 10th and 11th at the Royal Albert Hall in London, with winners virtually accepting the awards.
