Hands off Oscar!

Typically, when it is claimed that someone was “robbed of an Oscar”, it means something a little different than this…

You’d think that on Hollywood’s biggest night, with security — and paparazzi — swarming around, it would probably be a rather bad idea to try to commit a crime.

But, one guy definitely had the gall to attempt anyway.

Once all the winners have been announced and the acceptance speeches made at the Oscars ceremony itself, the industry’s elite makes their way to the Governors Ball to party the night away.

The little statuettes which have been won just a few hours before usually join the festivities, as stars mingle with each other and take selfies with Hollywood’s most famous man.

Best Actress winner, Frances McDormand, almost had her little guy snatched away, however, when she set him down for a minute whilst talking to someone.

The photographer for chef Wolfgang Puck, who always caters the annual event, caught the potential thief in the act and took back the Oscar. The assailant — now identified as Terry Bryant — then left the party after Frances said to let him go, before being arrested for grand theft.

If anyone spots this guy, please give him a Razzie instead…

Oscar had a lot of powder to apply to his red face following last year’s incorrect announcement of Best Picture and a year in which Hollywood has been scarred by dozens of scandals.

Talk show host, Jimmy Kimmel, reprised his role as MC for the 90th edition of the awards, telling nominees, “When you hear your name called, don’t get up right away. Give us a minute. Because last year we had a thing.”

Jimmy also called for an end to sexual harassment in the workplace, saying that, “If we can work together, women will only have to deal with harassment all the time at every other place they go.”

But, not all of Hollywood’s biggest night was serious, with Mr. Kimmel leading a cast of stars including Gal Gadot, Margo Robbie, and Mark Hamill across the street to surprise movie-goers at the Roosevelt Theatre.

First time nominees, Sam Rockwell and Allison Janney, took home Best Supporting Actor and Actress, respectively, with the latter making a joke that she had done it all without anyone’s help.

Gary Oldman told his 99-year-old mom to “Put the kettle on. I’m bringing Oscar home,” during his acceptance speech for Best Actor, while Best Actress winner, Frances McDormand, called on all the female nominees in the audience to stand up and encouraged studios to provide funding so that their stories could be told.

Guillermo del Toro was just one of the stars who received the opportunity to do Mexico proud as he won Best Director for Shape of Water after losing out 3 times in the past.

Thankfully, Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty received the right envelope this time as they again graced the stage to present Best Picture which this time went to The Shape of Water which picked up the most golden statuettes of the night with 4.
