The Idol took us on one wild ride during its first season, but the end of the road is already on the horizon. HBO officially announced the cancelation of Sam Levinson’s provocative drama starring Lily-Rose Depp and The Weeknd after a single season.

HBO released an official statement announcing the ending of The Idol and thanked its creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work.

“The Idol was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response. After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers, have decided not to move forward with a second season,” said an HBO spokeswoman.

The Idol followed a young singer Jocelyn (Depp), who’s on a quest to to claim her rightful status as the greatest pop star in America after canceling her last tour due to a nervous breakdown. Her comeback gets more complicated after she finds herself entangled with Tedros (The Weeknd), a mysterious nightclub owner with a dark past.

The Idol featured a total of five episodes, and it also starred Troye Sivan, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Dan Levy, Eli Roth, Hari Nef, Jane Adams, Jennie Ruby Jane, Mike Dean, Moses Sumney, Rachel Sennott, Suzanna Son, and Hank Azaria.

The Idol is one of HBO’s most anticipated shows of the year, and we finally know when it will see the light of day. Following its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, this musical drama will arrive at HBO in June, according to its newly released teaser trailer.

HBO previously described The Idol as “the sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood” that comes from the twisted minds of Sam Levinson and Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, and here’s what its official synopsis has to say about it:

“After a nervous breakdown derailed Jocelyn’s last tour, she’s determined to claim her rightful status as the greatest and se-iest pop star in America. Her passions are reignited by Tedros, a nightclub impresario with a sordid past. Will her romantic awakening take her to glorious new heights or the deepest and darkest depths of her soul?”

The Idol stars Lily-Rose Depp and The Weeknd in the lead roles, while the supporting cast includes Suzanna Son, Troye Sivan, Moses Sumney, Jane Adams, Dan Levy, Jennie Kim, Eli Roth, Rachel Sennott, Hari Nef, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Mike Dean, and Hank Azaria.

Following its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month, The Idol will be released on HBO on June 4, and it will feature a total of six episodes.

The Weeknd has been teasing his new album Dawn FM for quite some time, but it wasn’t enough to grant it no. 1 debut on the Billboard 200 chart. It’s his first album in years to miss out on the top spot, but does that make it a failure?

Upon its release on January 7th, Dawn FM was met with rave reviews from the critics, and Variety even went so far as to describe it as “possibly The Weeknd’s best and most fully realized album to date.” The Canadian singer truly branched out and experimented with many musical styles, from his signature mixture of pop and R&B to EDM, hip-hop, and new wave.

Dawn FM is definitely a big triumph from the creative point of view, and its failure to debut at no. 1 doesn’t change that. It may be The Weekend’s first studio album since his debut LP Kiss Land to debut at no. 2, but it managed to top the charts in many countries outside of the US, starting with Australia and the UK.

Dawn FM also wasn’t very far behind Gunna’s DS4Ever, which topped the charts this week with 150,300 equivalent album units earned. It hit no. 2 on the Billboard 200 with 148,000 units, and it might soar higher since it’s not facing tough competition in the upcoming weeks.

No matter who wins or loses the Super Bowl, there’s always one moment that receives more attention than the game itself—the halftime show. This year was no different, and we owe it all to The Weeknd’s spectacular, meme-worthy performance.

Without any supporting performers or flashy gimmicks to rely on, the Canadian singer let his music speak—and it spoke volumes. His set consisted of his biggest hits, such as “Can’t Feel My Face”, “Starboy”, and “The Hills”, and the beloved songs from his latest album After Hours, including “Blinding Lights” and “Save Your Tears”.

Some parts of his performance may have been strange to people who aren’t familiar with his oeuvre, but it was a real treat for the fans. Each and every tiny detail—including those bandaged dancers that got everyone talking—were an obvious nod to the persona and rich inner world he created on After Hours.

Like every halftime show that took place in the era of Twitter, this one led to countless memes that kept us laughing all night long. They were poking fun at everything from the backup dancers to the confused look on The Weeknd’s face and made us appreciate his performance even more by finding some humor in the whole ordeal.

The Weeknd gave us one of the most talked-about albums of the year with After Hours, and the numbers reflect its enormous success. It’s been over three weeks since this album came out, and it’s still no. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.

After Hours hit the shelves on March 20th, and quickly debuted at no. 1 in the US, with the biggest first-week sales of the year. That was just the beginning of the Weeknd’s triumph, since his album returned to the top of the charts for the next two weeks, as well.

This time around, After Hours earned 90,000 equivalent album units, and Billboard credited its continuous success to the sales of the Weeknd’s merchandise/album bundles. It also helps that the Canadian rapper didn’t have a tough competition last week, since there weren’t any new albums released by highly-popular mainstream artists.

American rapper Rod Wave came in second with his sophomore album Pray 4 Love, while the former no. 1 albums Eternal Atake by Lil Uzi Vert and My Turn by Lil Baby took the third and fourth spots, respectively.
