The weekend brought some excellent news to all The Simpsons fans.

A new film based on the long-running hit animated series debuted on the streaming platform. The original plan was for the film to be released in theaters.

The Simpsons creator Matt Groening announced the news on Instagram writing, “Greetings Friends! Earlier this year we made a nifty little short film called Playdate with Destiny. The response was so gratifying we wanted everyone to see it at home. So here ya go — stream it starting April 10th on Disney Plus.”

This isn’t the first time the youngest member of everyone’s favorite animated yellow family already fronted a short film in the 2012 Academy Award-nominated film, Maggie Simpson in The Longest Daycare’.

The list of celebrities that have made a cameo on The Simpsons over the years is long, too long to be listed here. Now, the latest addition to this distinguished group is The Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons.

Although Parsons appears as himself and not as his famous character Sheldon Cooper, his performance is incredibly on-brand. In the cameo, Parsons is introduced by Professor Frink during an interview he gives Lisa Simpson after he became the richest man in Springfield using his cryptocurrency “frinkcoin”.

Frink enlists Parson to explain what Cryptocurrency is, and it is safe to say no one will be wiser on the subject after watching this bit. Apart from confusing everyone, Parson uses his screen time mainly to prove that he is not a nerd, but cool.

It is evident that Parson had a hard time leaving his breakthrough character behind. Just before the last The Big Bang Theory episode aired, he said: “It was the first time in my life of doing this show that it occurred to me that I might want to not do another contract after [season] 12 was up. There was no factor; there was no situation that I was like, ‘Well, I’ve had enough of that.’ No. There was nothing like that. It was just… when you know, you know”.

Hank Azaria has confirmed that he will no longer voice the Kwik-E-Mart owner Apu Nahasapeemapetilon.

It is still unclear whether the character, which was created in 1990 and has been recently accused of reinforcing racial stereotypes, will actually be dropped from the cartoon.

“What they’re going to do with the character is their call,” Azaria said. “It’s up to them and they haven’t sorted it out yet. All we’ve agreed on is I won’t do the voice anymore. … We all feel like it’s the right thing and good about it.”

Controversy over the character was sparked back in 2017.

“As far as The Simpsons is concerned, it’s often a fine line between what’s comedy and what’s offensive and insulting and upsetting,” Azaria said back then.

The Simpsons over the years have been pretty humorously offensive to all manner of people — Republicans, Brazilians, presidents, high school principals, Italians — and they take a lot of pride over there in not apologizing for any of that. I think they’ve done a really good job of being, shall we say, uniformly offensive without being outright hurtful.”

Grab the doughnuts, because there’s still hope for a sequel to The Simpsons Movie.

The film starring the yellow family from Springfield came out in 2007 and proved to be quite a hit with audiences and critics.

Grossing $527 million worldwide (and becoming the 8th biggest film of that year), the movie earned a nomination at the Annie Awards for Best Animated Feature.

Now, series creator Matt Groening has renewed hope that Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie will return to the big screen.

“No doubt there will be another Simpsons movie one of these days,” he said at San Diego Comic-Con. “I think Disney wants something for its money.”

Disney now owns FOX, which produces The Simpsons.

That aside, Groening admitted that making the first movie was extremely hard.

“The first Simpsons Movie almost killed us,” he said. “We didn’t have a B-team waiting to do The Simpsons Movie, so the same people who wrote, animated, voiced and did the music for The Simpsons TV show also did the movie. That was in 2007. We’re almost recovered, almost.”

We think they’ve had enough time. Bring on the sequel!
