Warner Bros. Confirmed in August that the fourth installment in The Matrix franchise was in development — 16 years after the third film was released. 

Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will be reprising their respective roles as Neo and Trinity, while Lana Wachowski will be handling directing duties without her sister Lilly. In addition, she will also write the screenplay with Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell.

While plot details have remained hush-hush, Abdul-Mateen II is believed to have secured a lead role. It has been speculated that the Aquaman actor could be playing a younger version of Laurence Fishburne’s Morpheus. 

The three films in the franchise — The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded, and The Matrix Revolutions — earned a collective $1.6 billion at the box office. 

The Matrix 4 is scheduled to commence production in Chicago in February 2020.

Details of the new film are still largely unknown. Reeves and Moss will play their original characters Neo and Trinity, respectively, but it is not clear if Morpheus will appear in the film. The rebel leader was portrayed by Laurence Fishburne, but the talk is that the role may be recast with a younger actor.

The original trilogy followed Neo, a computer hacker who discovers that reality is simulated by machines that took over the world. He gets rescued by the human rebels and becomes “The One,” a central entity in humanity’s fight for freedom.

The films had a tremendous cultural effect and have been received with a critical and financial acclaim. The first movie earned $460 million worldwide, and together with the two sequels, The Matrix: Reloaded and The Matrix: Revolutions, the franchise made $1.6 billion.
