]]>Barrino takes on the role of the film’s central figure, a Black Southern woman named Celie Harris, who embarks on a quest of self-discovery over the course of four decades while trying to come to terms with the abuse she suffered at the hands of her father in her youth.
In addition to Barrino and Henson, this project will also star Halle Bailey, Elizabeth Marvel, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Danielle Brooks, H.E.R, Coleman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, Louis Gossett Jr., and David Alan Grier. Blitz Bazawule serves as a director, while Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Quincy Jones boarded the project as producers.
The Color Purple draws inspiration from Alice Walker’s book of the same name, which inspired the hit stage musical that this new adaptation is based on. It ran on Broadway between 2005 and 2008 and earned 11 Tony nods during its original run before being revived in 2015.
The Color Purple is scheduled to be released by Warner Bros. Pictures on December 25.

]]>33 years after film audiences were introduced to Alice Walker’s novel, The Color Purple, history is scheduled to repeat itself.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning work about African-American women in the American South during the early 1900s was directed for the screen by Steven Spielberg and starred Oprah Winfrey, Danny Glover, and Whoopi Goldberg.
Since then, it has been adapted into a stage musical which has starred American Idol winner, Fantasia Barrino, and Dreamgirls actress, Jennifer Hudson, throughout its various runs.
Spielberg, Winfrey, and producer Quincy Jones are now reportedly adapting the musical version for the screen.
The stage production has won 3 Tony Awards while the film did not take home any of the 11 Academy Awards for which it was nominated.
Perhaps it will be second time lucky…
