The world premiere of the highly anticipated Elton John biopic has been set for May 16th.

“We are incredibly honored and excited to premiere our movie Rocketman at the Cannes film festival on May 16th. This has been a labor of love for all of us, and we couldn’t dream of a better launching pad for this very special film,” said producers Rocket Pictures and Marv Films in a statement.

The gaudy and debauch-heavy film tells the fantastical human story of John’s breakthrough years. It follows John’s early days as a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music up to his eventual musical partnership with Bernie Taupin. 

Starring as John is Taron Egerton alongside Jamie Bell, Richard Madden, and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Rocketman is directed by Dexter Fletcher, who took over as helmer on the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody after director Bryan Singer was fired.

The Cannes Film Festival debut will be followed by a May 31st domestic release.

Colin Firth, Taron Egerton, and Mark Strong starred in Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kingsman: The Golden Circle, which follows the secret spy organization from the comic book series by Mark Millar.

While a third film is being filmed at this end of this year (sadly, without Egerton), a prequel is also in the works.

Daniel Bruhl, Charles Dance, Matthew Goode, Rhys Ifans, Djimon Hounsou, Ralph Fiennes, Tom Hollander, Harris Dickinson, and Alison Steadman have already been cast and will now be joined by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Gemma Arterton.

Dickinson and Fiennes will star as the protégé and mentor, while Hollander will feature in several roles.

The film, like its predecessors, will be directed by Michael Vaughan.

Paramount dropped a first look photo of Taron Egerton as the pop icon. There’s no doubt the transformation is complete with Egerton clad in a gold lamé jacket paired with glittery sunglasses and winged boots while lounging on a couch inside a private plane.T

he resemblance is so uncanny that John himself took to social media, sharing the image and writing, “Words cannot describe how proud and excited I am. Hold on to your glasses, this is going to be a wild ride!”

The Dexter Fletcher helmed feature is touted by the studio as an “uncensored” telling of Elton’s life. The “epic musical fantasy” will take the viewers through the icon’s early years.  

Rounding out the cast are Jamie Bell, Richard Madden, Gemma Jones, and Bryce Dallas Howard. 

The film will premiere on May 31, 2019.
