Pick out your prom dress, because Carrie is coming to FX.

The title is the latest of Stephen King’s work to be adapted for the small screen and will premiere on the network next year as a limited series.

The horror novel tells the tale of a 16-year-old teenage who is subjected to constant bullying from her high school peers. What they don’t know, however, is that the teenager possesses supernatural powers. Everything then comes to a head when Carrie is elected prom queen…

Originally published in 1974, it was made into a film by Brian De Palma two years later. Sissy Spacek starred as the titular character and received her first Academy Award nomination for her performance.

The story was remade six years ago based on a screenplay by Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, with Chloë Grace Moretz taking over Spacek’s role and Kimberly Peirce taking over from De Palma.

FX has yet to cast their leading lady or a writer. It is believed, however, that Carrie will be played by a trans performer or actress of color in the upcoming series.

Stephen king’s newest novel The Institute has just hit the shelves, but it is already being adapted into a TV series.

The rights to the book were won by Spyglass, which plans to make it into a limited series, according to Variety.

David E. Kelly will write the script and serve as an executive producer, while Lost director Jack Bender will direct and also serve as an executive producer. The two have already worked together in the past on Mr. Mercedes an adaptation of Stephen King’s Bill Hodges trilogy.

The Institute follows Luke Ellis whose parents are murdered in the middle of the night by intruders. Luke wakes up at The Institute in a room that looks just like his own, except there are no windows. Outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents, such as telekinesis and telepathy, who got there the same way Luke did. It is said to be one of King’s scariest novels.

“We have big plans for The Institute here at Spyglass,” said Spyglass’ president of television Lauren Whitney. “Having the opportunity to work on a new and brilliant book by Stephen King is an absolute privilege. We are thrilled to collaborate with this dream team, including the incomparable David E. Kelley, and Jack Bender, the architect behind this project, whose extensive directing and executive producing credits speak for themselves.”

The first official trailer for The Shinning sequel, Doctor Sleep, is here.

The forthcoming film adaptation of Stephen King’s 2013 novel is also a sequel to his 1977 novel The Shinning, which was made into the critically acclaimed 1980 film by Stanley Kubrick.

The film centers on now adult Danny Torrance (Ewan McGregor), Jack Nicholson’s on-screen son in The Shining, battling a drinking problem and the emergence of strange powers. He then encounters a teenager named Abra who, like himself, has a powerful extrasensory gift.

“When I was a kid, I bumped into these things. I don’t know about magic. I always called it the shining,” he tells Abra (Kyliegh Curran) in the trailer.

“We pick up Dan in New Jersey and in the throes of his alcoholism, kind of right at rock bottom is where we meet him,” writer-director Mike Flanagan said.

“He’s nomadic, he’s violent, he’s crawled so far into a bottle that there doesn’t seem to be an easy way out. It’s really kind of a strange experience to meet your hero kind at their most awful version of themselves. Structurally, it’s really fascinating, from a writing point of view. You kind of feel like, ‘This is our hero, ladies and gentlemen, you’re going to meet him puking.’ So, yeah, we pick up Dan at the lowest point of his life, and, more than anything, this is a story about his redemption and trying to avoid repeating the same fate that his father had to deal with, outside of the hotel, just with his own addiction.”

The feature also stars Carl Lumbly, Zahn McLarnon, Emily Alyn Lind, Bruce Greenwood, Jocelin Donahue, Alex Essoe, and Cliff Curtis.

Doctor Sleep hits theaters November 8.

Longtime gestating, it looks like a sequel to The Shining is finally coming.

Warner Bros. had been developing an on-screen adaptation to Stephen King’s novel Doctor Sleep and sequel to The Shining for years now. Variety reports that the studios have finally decided to fast-track the project into pre-production.

Set to star as all grown up Danny Torrance is Ewan McGregor, a casting that King himself has given a blessing to.

Doctor Sleep picks up with Torrance in middle age, still haunted by the trauma of the Overlook Hotel. A spitting image of his father, a man who suffers from rage and a drinking problem, he works as a hospice nurse. Once he embraces sobriety, he uses his “shining” powers to ease the transition for dying patients at the hospice when he discovers that there is a way for his powers to grow.

Mike Flanagan is directing and Trevor Macy is producing along with Vertigo Entertainment’s Jon Berg.

Whether Doctor Sleep will be a sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film version of The Shining or the novel itself is not yet known. King himself told EW: “One of the things — and I’m not sure if this is going to be a problem for readers or not — is that Doctor Sleep is a sequel to the novel. It’s not a sequel to the Kubrick film. At the end of the Kubrick film, the Overlook is still there. It just kind of freezes. But at the end of the book, it burns down.”

The original adaptation of The Shinning starred Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall and Danny Lloyd as young Danny Torrance.

You can see McGregor next in Disney’s new live-action Winnie the Pooh adaptation, Christopher Robin.
