Multiple outlets confirm that the Oscar-winning filmmaker will direct a filmed version of the acclaimed Broadway show David Byrne’s American Utopia. 

“Pinch me. This couldn’t have worked out better for this project,” Byrne said in a statement. “Spike Lee directing and Participant producing — two socially engaged teams, well, three if you count us in the band, coming together in what I feel will be something moving, important, and unlike anything anyone has seen before.”

Participant CEO David Linde added, “American Utopia is a true celebration from a great artist and a beautiful reminder to our nation that we are all born barefoot and wearing the same suit. We are incredibly excited to work with Mr. Byrne and the incomparable Spike Lee, along with RadicalMedia, River Road and Warner Music Group, in bringing this one-of-a-kind event out of the theater to audiences around the world.”

The film is planned for release later this year.

The Shakespearean tragedy has received countless adaptations over the years. The most famous of these is likely Baz Lurhmann’s modern interpretation starring Leonardo Di Caprio. The film is filled with surprises and as expected, it has a fantastic soundtrack.

More than two decades later, Lee is revising the classic tragedy and he is putting his own spin on the tale. Titled Prince of Cats, the adaptation will be set in the 1980s and will have a “hop hop twist”. It is also going to be approached from the point of view of Juliet’s cousin, Tybalt.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film “centers on Tybalt and his Capulet brothers, who navigate Da People’s Republic of Brooklyn, where underground sword dueling — including katanas — with the rival Montagues blossoms into a vibrant world. That world includes hip-hop essentials such as DJing, emceeing, breakdancing and graffiti.”

The movie will be based on Ron Wimberly’s graphic novel. Lee will rewrite the script with the help of Wimberly and Selwyn Seyfu Hind.

The 35 honorees were chosen by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce’s Walk of Fame Selection Committee and span across the entire entertainment industry.

Roberts will be joined by fellow Academy Award winners Mahersala Ali and Octavia Spencer, as well as Chris Hemsworth, director Spike Lee, and even Batman!

The television category is no less impressive, including Christina Applegate and Terry Crews, Andy Cohen, and Wendy Williams.

Alicia Keys will represent the music genre, alongside rapper 50 Cent and Billy Idol, while comedian Dave Chapelle will also get his own star.
