Rocketman will document the “I’m Still Standing” singer’s early days as a musical prodigy, up until his musical partnership with Bernie Tauplin.

John has made it explicitly clear that he intends the film, which is directed by Dexter Fletcher, to be a no-holds-barred depiction, including all the gritty details of his past, which included substance abuse, depression, and struggles with his sexuality.

“It had to be as honest as possible. The lows were very low, but the highs were very high, and that’s how I wanted the film to be,” he said in a promo for the feature.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle star Taron Egerton will portray the Grammy winner, and has been confirmed as providing his own voice for the musician’s classic songs.

He will be joined on screen by Jamie Bell, Richard Madden, Bryce Dallas Howard, Stephen Graham, and Tate Donovan.

Rocketman is set to have its world premiere at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival on the 16th of May, before being released in the UK on the 22nd.

The world premiere of the highly anticipated Elton John biopic has been set for May 16th.

“We are incredibly honored and excited to premiere our movie Rocketman at the Cannes film festival on May 16th. This has been a labor of love for all of us, and we couldn’t dream of a better launching pad for this very special film,” said producers Rocket Pictures and Marv Films in a statement.

The gaudy and debauch-heavy film tells the fantastical human story of John’s breakthrough years. It follows John’s early days as a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music up to his eventual musical partnership with Bernie Taupin. 

Starring as John is Taron Egerton alongside Jamie Bell, Richard Madden, and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Rocketman is directed by Dexter Fletcher, who took over as helmer on the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody after director Bryan Singer was fired.

The Cannes Film Festival debut will be followed by a May 31st domestic release.
