Netflix gave us its first African original series with Queen Sono, and they’re planning to further explore this story by renewing it for another season.

Dorothy Ghettuba, who leads African originals at Netflix, praised showrunner Kagiso Lediga and the rest of his team for delivering a compelling story that resonated with their audience and explored the complexities and nuances of the African experience.

“The first season of Queen Sono marked the beginning of our journey to introduce the world to exciting stories that are made in Africa. It was an unprecedented representation of a strong female black lead in African television,” said Ghettuba in a statement.

Queen Sono premiered on Netflix on February 28th, and it was met with positive critical reception. It follows the journey of a South African spy who tackles criminal operations while trying to uncover the truth behind her mother’s death. Pearl Thusi plays the titular role, but the cast also includes Vuyo Dabula, Sechaba Morojele, Chi Mhende, and Loyiso Madinga.
