]]>The 2019 ceremony did not have an official master or mistress of ceremonies after Kevin Hart stepped down in the wake of criticism over previous homophobic remarks he had made.
The result was an Academy Awards that felt slightly disjointed, with notable names instead coming up on stage to present the different categories and nominees for Best Picture.
One such star was Trevor Noah, who had the honor of introducing those in the audience and at home to the first-ever comic book film nominated for the prestigious award, Black Panther.
The Daily Show host revealed that people from around the world constantly come up to him and say “Wakanda Forever” because he comes from Africa — despite the fact that Wakanda is a fictional country.
“Growing up as a young boy in Wakanda, I would see King T’Challa flying over our village, and he would remind me of a great Xhosa phrase, ‘Abelungu abazi ubu ndiyaxoka,’ which means ‘In times like these, we are stronger when we fight together than when we try to fight apart,'” he said.
Noah’s powerful message and use of his native language drew cheers from the audience at the Dolby Theatre, but his South African countrymen giggled on Twitter.
Those with an understanding of Xhosa knew that the comedian had really said, “White people don’t know I’m lying,” with a totally straight face.
Academy, here is your 2020 presenter.

“Welcome to the family”… Kevin Hart!
The comedian may not have starred in much Oscar fare himself, but is well-known to audiences for films such as Ride Along, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Night School.
In an Instagram post, the 39-year-old revealed that this has been one of his goals for a very long time.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences confirmed the news, welcoming Kevin to the family.

The movie, which is shot in black and white, is somewhat autobiographical as it draws on Alfonso’s memories of growing up in Mexico City during the ‘70s. It centers around a middle-class family who is quietly and unassumingly cared for by its beloved, live-in nanny and housekeeper portrayed by Yalitza Aparicio.
Roma will vie for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar against submissions from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Kosovo, Luxembourg, and Montenegro, Hungary, Russia, and Iran.
47 countries have so far submitted entries, with the closing date the 1st of October 2018.

]]>The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced last month that it would be introducing a new category to the 2019 Academy Awards, entitled “Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film.”
The introduction sparked criticism from many within the industry, including Code Black actor, Rob Lowe, who signaled it as the death of the film industry:
The film business passed away today with the announcement of the “popular” film Oscar. It had been in poor health for a number of years. It is survived by sequels, tent-poles, and vertical integration.

And now, it appears as though the Academy is having second thoughts…
“The Academy recognized that implementing any new award nine months into the year creates challenges for films that have already been released,” AMPAS said in a statement. “There has been a wide range of reactions to the introduction of a new award, and we recognize the need for further discussion with our members.”
One change which will remain, however, is the handing out of some awards during commercial breaks to make the ceremony broadcast shorter.
The 91st annual Academy Awards will be held at the Dolby Theatre on the 24th of February 2019.

]]>The eagerly anticipated Academy Awards (try saying that five times fast!) was delayed this year until the first Sunday of March so as to avoid conflicting with the closing ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.
With all skis out of the way, the Oscars can now return to a more regular date in 2019.
The Academy has announced that the 91st edition of the awards will take place on the 24th of February.
Awards season will officially kick off on the 18th of November this year when the Academy hosts the Governors Awards.
Festivities will continue in January as nomination voting runs from the 7th to the 14th and nominations are officially announced on the 22nd.
Final voting will then commence on the 12th of February and conclude on the 19th before the big day on the 24th.
Hope you’ve cleared your schedules.
