Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman has been watched by more that 26 million Netflix accounts.

While the streaming giant is known for not releasing viewership data, this time it has made an exception. More than 26 million global accounts (26,404,081, to be exact) watched at least 70% of the Golden Globe-nominated mobster film in its first seven days on the platform, according to Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer.

Sarandos added that Netflix expects about 40 million account holders to have watched the film over its first 28 days.

Netflix’s Golden Globe Awards nominations haul includes 34 nods across TV and film with The Irishman getting five alone.

“It’s a good mark of quality — both for the industry and for consumers, meaning you want to be at that place where all the good stuff is happening,” Sarandos added. “Creators mostly want to be in the culture… and Netflix can do that like nobody else.”

Marvel has a real-life superhero in the form of Paul Rudd.

The Living with Yourself actor is known for portraying Ant-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and came to its rescue when the studio’s films came under criticism.

Renowned director Martin Scorsese recently referred to Marvel’s movies as “not cinema” during an interview with Empire.

“I don’t see them. I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema,” The Irishman filmmaker said. “Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well-made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks.”

Whilst speaking to Howard Stern, Rudd presented a different view.

“Ultimately, you really care about relationships with people. It isn’t all just special effects–driven. You wanna see people and human behaviour and talking to each other,” he said.

The actor continued, “In Ant-Man, I have a whole relationship with my daughter and the human struggles of being a superhero. I think we’re trying to deal with human issues and things that are relatable that are not just rides.”

Hear, hear.

Guardians of the Galaxy actress Karen Gillan has joined the group of actors who have defended the Marvel Cinematic Universe against director Martin Scorsese’s negative comments.

Scorsese told Empire that the Marvel films are “not cinema” and clarified his comments by saying: “Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”

In light of his criticism, Gillan has jumped to Marvel’s defense, telling The Hollywood Reporter that “I would absolutely say that Marvel movies are cinema.”

She went on to praise “Guardians” director James Gunn. She said: “Cinema is story-telling with visuals. There’s so much heart and soul, and it’s James’ soul in there. He injects so much of his own personality, his sense of humor … that’s a very big representation of who he is as a person and therefore it’s very cinematic. He’s an artist.”

The dream team of Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Roberto De Niro could be back together again.

The trio were set to collaborate on Scorsese’s forthcoming picture, Killers of the Flower Moon, which is an adaptation of the non-fiction book by David Grann.

The book covers the true story of the multiple murders of members of the Osage Indian tribe in Oklahoma during the 1920s that occurred after they found oil on their lands.

All three have worked together previously — Scorsese and De Niro on The Irishman, Mean Streets, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Taxi Driver and Casino; Scorsese and DiCaprio on Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, and The Wolf of Wall Street; and DiCaprio and De Niro on Marvin’s Room and This Boy’s Life.

While DiCaprio has already signed on to Killers of the Flower Moon, De Niro is reportedly in early negotiations for the role of serial killer, William Hale.
