The network has decided to renew Law & Order: Special Victims Unit for yet another season.

But the re-ordering of Dick Wolf’s series is not just a regular renewal — it makes Law & Order: SVU television’s longest-running primetime live-action series.

With 21 seasons in the bag, the show has surpassed the original Law & Order which ran for 20, as well as Gunsmoke which also completed two decade’s worth of episodes.

Much of SUV’s success can be attributed to its lead, Mariska Hargitay, who has been the constant throughout the 21 years. The renewal also means that Lieutenant Olivia Benson becomes the longest-running character in a primetime live-action series.

It is not all good news, however, as it has been confirmed that Phillip Winchester will not be reprising his role as ADA Peter Stone.

Winchester joined SVU in season 19 as his character from Chicago P.D. and Chicago Justice, who is the son of Benjamin Stone, the first ADA on the original Law & Order series.
